COMPANY PROFILE

REBRAND REFLECTS SHIFTING FOCUS TO SHAPING COMMUNITIES AND IMPROVING LIVES OF THOSE WHO LIVE OR WORK WITHIN THEIR DESIGNS… Shorter name – extra focus

I t was a “light bulb” moment that elevated the McAdam Design ethos and culture from solely a client and service focused approach to one that recognises and responds to the needs of the communities who use the environment they shape. “Historically, we are service and client focused and this commitment to meeting the needs of our clients has helped grow the company to where it is today, and we can’t lose sight of that,” said Martin Hare, Managing Director. “However, when we looked at some of the projects we have been involved in, such as leisure centres, greenways, parks, wastewater treatment works, we realised that we are doing more than just meeting a client brief. We are helping people live better lives by designing built environments that provide opportunities to improve their lifestyle choices and the environment that they live within.” Fergus Kerr, Engineering Director agreed, “The concept that actually, the people we really serve are not often the people who pay the cheques, but in fact, the people who use the buildings and infrastructure was a bit of a ‘light bulb’ moment.” Both veterans of the worlds of

architecture and engineering, Martin and Fergus recognised a step-change in the way the company’s graduate intake viewed the profession they were entering. “Our younger staff members have a very strong sense of purpose; they aspire to do something to improve the communities we live in and protect the environment globally. When we started our rebranding process we asked ourselves, what do we do best and how do we inspire our staff to feel pride about the work they do. We listed: local company, multi-disciplinary, technical excellence, strong, efficient delivery of projects that add benefit to the community - amongst other things. We realised our existing company strapline: Providing Sustainable Design Solutions didn’t go far enough. We design built assets, yes, but it’s the positive, enhancing, impact this has on people’s lives and the environment around them that’s important. Sustainability is more than environmental protection, its about providing a stronger, better legacy for the communities our projects affect. That’s why we decided to rebrand the company as an external manifestation of something it has always been.”

‘McAdam - Enchancing local communities,’ is the new brand strapline - which also reveals a slight but significant name change. The removal of ‘Design’ from the logo has been a desire of the ownership group for several years and it feels like now is the right time for this to happen. “To single out just one aspect of our services, design, does not reflect our unique, multidisciplinary offering,” said Martin. “We work right across the spheres of engineering, architecture and project management and this is our strength.” Along with establishing a new value and vision for the company, the new McAdam group ownership has been on a major recruitment drive. Fergus explains, “We’re investing in staff, particularly graduate and apprenticeship entry points. In the last six months we’ve employed 15 new staff members - including four apprentices - which equates to a 15-20% growth on where we were. “We are also focused on our approach to training and current benefits package and working practices to help support our staff during this difficult time enhancing them as, after all, they are part of the McAdam community.
