The door to Christ’s love. “If ye keep my commandments” (v. 10). “These things have I spoken . . . that my joy might remain in you” (v. 11). 4. The compulsion of Christ’s love. “My commandment . . . love one another” (v. 12). “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (v. 14). How much love did Christ have for us? The answer is the cross of Calvary. 5. The wonder of Christ’s love. Taken into His confidence (v. IS). III. Partners of Christ—Sharing in His Work (vs. 16, 17). 1. Chosen. 4. Are the prayer promises listed in verses 13 and 14 true? What condition of prayer is laid down here? (It should be remembered that one scripture interprets and qualifies another. Jesus lays down several rules for effective prayer. We find one of them here.) 5. Discuss the subject of obedience as suggested in verses IS to 21, 23, 24, and 31. What are the commands which Christ gives in these passages? 6. List the various characteristics of the Comforter as recorded in verses 16, 17, and 26. Who is the Comforter to whom He refers (cf. Acts 1:8; John 15:26; 16:7, 13, 14)? 7. In verse 27, we find Christ’s bequest of peace. He contrasts His peace with that of the world. Discuss the difference between the two. Has the Christian any right to be worried, troubled, or fearful concerning any circumstances which may assail him, if his life and heart are right with God? _ _ _ _ OCTOBER 11, 1931 Abiding in Christ J ohn IS T h ere a re f e w facts of the Christian plain how human nature can be sur charged with divine power is impossible; but the fact is clearly taught in Scripture, and the result of this inter-communion and fellowship has been experienced by countless followers of the Lord Jesus Christ from the day of Pentecost to the present time. John IS presents in para bolic form the conditions of, the princi ples underlying, and the fruit resulting from this union with the Son of God. The Holy Spirit was to enter and to be come a life-giving, ever-abiding presence —the result to be the rich fruit of spirit ual experience, Christian virtues, and the salvation of other souls. Preparation John 15, like John 14, abounds in thought-provoking, heart-comforting say ings of our Lord. We again place the em phasis upon the memorizing of as much as possible of this chapter. MONDAY: Read through the chapter, noting the three principle divisions, and working out a simple outline for each. TUESDAY: There are nine conditional statements made by Christ in this chapter, intro duced by the little word “if.” Find them, list the condition and the result, and write a brief comment on each. WEDNESDAY: Read the entire chapter four or five times, memorizing as much as possible. THURSDAY: Repeat the exercise of Wednesday. FRIDAY: This chapter abounds in excellent prom ises. Find as many as you can, and copy them in your notebook. SATURDAY: Go through the chapter and list all the times when Christ qses the personal pronoun, and the comments which He makes concerning Himself. SUNDAY: Select some thought from this chapter to be used in the preparation of a brief

Faithless followers will be cut off. “Every branch . . . that beareth not fruit he taketh away” (v. 2). Faithful followers m u s t be cleansed through the Word (v. 3) that they may bring forth more fruit. “Now ye are clean”—re ceiving the Word gives us poten tial cleansing. Practically, we must apply the knife. Obedience and submission, conse cration, yielding our lives to God, and self-surrender (vs. 4, 5). There is only one way of salva tion. Those who do not truly abide in Christ are “cast forth as branches . . . into the fire and they are burned” (v. 6). Abide, ask, receive, bear fruit (vs. 7, 8). Friends o f Christ—Sharing in His Love (vs. 9-15). 3. Abiding. 4. Warning. 5. Promise II. 2. Cleansing.
