September 1931 Father in heaven. We shall be ever so glad, some day, that we had to wait. — S elected . SEPTEMBER 29 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you : and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jeru salem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part o f the earth” (Acts 1:8). The Lord knew what the years would mean for His disciples, of sacrifice, of toil; how many of them would only see His face again as they passed through the gate of martyrdom. So He said to them: “Ye shall receive power you will need— the power for patient endurance, the power for victorious contest with unequal forces, the power for adequate self-con trol, the power to be unrelentingly true to the vows you have made to Me in secret.” Ye shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost coming upon you—not as an influ ence to stir your emotions into an ecstasy and to die down as circumstances change, but an abiding Holy Spirit.— S elected . Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, Thou dost dwell within; Breath of life, and fire of love, Cleansing from all sin.* Holy, loving, true Thou art, Live within our breast; In the temple of our heart, Find Thy constant rest. — W il l ia m P ollock . SEPTEMBER 30 “Wherefore' have thy servants set my field on fire” (2 Sam. 14:31)? God often sees that a career of un broken worldly prosperity is very fatal to the soul. Therefore, He puts the torch to the barley field. Not only are the im penitent thus dealt with, to bring them to consider their ways, but His own children are often put through a process which is marvelously improving to their graces. A career of rapid success is seldom healthful to piety. Count up all the worldly losses you have had, and see if you are not the gainer, if these losses have but sent you closer to your Saviour. You have less money, perhaps, but more enjoyment of the treasures you found at the cross. You are richer toward God. Our loving God has a purpose in every trial. If any heart broken reader of these lines is crying out, like Joab, “Wherefore hast thou set my field on fire?” I beseech thee not to flee away from God in petulant despair. He is only burning up thy barley in order to bring thee closer to Himself. Let the flames light thee to the mercy-seat. The promises will read the brighter. It is bet ter to lose the barley than to lose the blessing.—T. L. C u y l e r . OCTOBER 1 "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Prov. 4:23). When Sir Walter Raleigh had laid his head upon the block, says an eloquent divine, he was asked by the executioner whether it lay aright. Whereupon, with the calmness of a hero and the faith of a Christian, he returned an answer the power of which we all shall feel when our

portrait of many a once hearty, vigorous saint of God, whose soul has been starved for want of the proper spiritual nourish ment, or by feeding upon “ashes” instead of bread.—G. S. B o w e s . SEPTEMBER 26 “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and under standing. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous’’ (Prov. 2:6, 7). Rest from an inordinate desire for knowledge, for it is subject to much per plexity and delusion. The soul is not to be satisfied with the multitude of words; but a holy life is a continual feast, and a pure conscience is the foundation of a firm and immovable confidence in God. Be not, therefore, exalted for any uncom mon skill in any art or science; but let the superior knowledge that is given thee make thee more fearful and more watch ful over thyself. The highest and most profitable learning is the knowledge and contempt of ourselves; and to have no opinion of our own merit, and always to think well and highly of others, is an evi dence of great wisdom and perfection. — T h o m a s A ’K e m p is . SEPTEMBER 27 “And I will make o f thee a great na tion, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing” (Gen. 12:2). They who live constantly in the light of His presence and are continually under the guidance and power of the indwell ing Spirit of God can not fail to be a blessing in any home or office, any church or market place that they may en ter. There is something about them that will inevitably and invariably make itself felt for good—a fragrant, unconscious in fluence that will affect others. It may be a quiet, restful spirit, a cheerfulness under adverse circumstances, a readiness to help or sympathize, an evident loyalty to all that is highest and truest and best. This is surely the Lord’s purpose for us as it was for Abraham to whom the promise was given: “I will bless thee.. . . and thou shalt be a blessing.”—F. J. H o rsefield . “Bless me, Lord, and make me a blessing, I’ll gladly Thy message convey. Use me to help some poor needy soul And make me a blessing I pray.” SEPTEMBER 28 “Wait on the Lord: be of good cour age, and he shall strengthen thine heart : wait, I say, on the Lord” (Psa. 27:14). How impatient we are, we creatures of a day! But we are also children of the Ancient of Days, and it would be indeed well for us if we should get some of His boundless patience. It would be well for us to learn to wait. Events that move swiftly, as seen from the timeless world, seem to us to come slowly; but it is only in the seeming. As we look back on our lives, we see how rapidly time has passed. Through waiting comes faith. Through waiting come calmness and confidence. Waiting, though it is motionless, and hard because it is motionless, is a spiritual gymnasium in which we grow strong. And while we are waiting on God, we are waiting with God. In the waiting rises a blessed companionship with our
swered it, and fulfilled this, our heart’s desire? For with Him, hearing means heeding. Then why should we doubt that He did verily take our lives when we of fered them, our bodies when we presented them? Have we not been wronging His faithfulness all this time by practically, even if unconsciously, doubting whether the prayer ever really reached Him? And if so, is it any wonder that we have not realized all the power and joy of full con-' secration?— F r a n c es R id ley H avergal . SEPTEMBER 25 “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 2). The fact of the Scriptures furnishing nutriment and upbuilding to the soul is the most real experience of which we have knowledge. None of us, “by taking thought, can add one cubit unto his stat ure.” But how many, by taking in God’s great thoughts, feeding on them, and in wardly digesting them, have added vastly to their spiritual stature!—A. J. G ordon . If a portrait were taken of a person in strong, vigorous health, and another were taken of the same man after a severe illness, or when he had been almost starved to death or weakened by confinement, we should scarcely recognize them as the likeness of the same man, the dear old friend we loved. Still greater would be the change could we draw the spiritual M O N E Y EARN MONEY QUICKLY, EASILY. SELL CHRISTMAS and EVERY DAY GREETING CARDS.
