All declension in the realm of trust arises more or less from the intrusion of some form of the self-life which always seeks the less rugged path. Personal in dulgence is a weakening process, for it creates a separation of interests and aims between the Lord Jesus Christ and His follower, and naturally results in spirit ual capacity diminishing, and spiritual gifts relaxing their hold of the source of strength. Self-preservation and self-love are the relentless antagonists of a strong, robust faith and a fruitful, joyous service. And nothing is more necessary in the Christian life of the present day than the coming into it with renewed vigor of the spirit of Calvary in its truest and most practical meaning.' When the power of the crucified and risen Son of God finds an open channel for its operations in the nature of the be liever, then faith becomes enlarged in its ability to keep in constant union with Him and “receive those divine reinvigora- tions which enable it to reach out toward the goal.— G ordon B. W a t t . OCTOBER 3 “She shall he brought unto the king in raiment of needlework” (Psa. 45:14). Was it ever known that a bride for got to have her wedding clothes made against the marriage day, or to put them on when she looked for her bridegroom’s coming? Holiness is the raiment of needlework in which, Christian, thou art to be brought to thy King and husband. Wherefore is the wedding day put off so long, but because this garment is so long a-making? When this is once wrought, and thou art ready dressed, then that joy ful day comes. Remember how the Holy Spirit wordeth it in the Book of Revela tion : “The marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.” — W il l ia m G u r n a l l . OCTOBER 4 “The strength of the hills is his also" (Psa. 95:4). It is exceedingly beneficial to our souls to mount above this present evil world to some nobler and better one. It would be well if the dwellers in the valley could frequently leave their abodes among the rparshes and the fever mists, and inhale the bracing element upon the hills. . . . May the Spirit of God assist us to leave the mists of fear and the fevers of anxiety and all the ills which gather in this valley of earth, and to ascend the mountains of anticipated joy and blessed ness. May God the Holy Spirit cut the cords that keep us here below, and assist us to mount. — C h a r l e s H addon S pu r g eo n .

A gloomy trail, a lonely vale, Ne’er reached by sun or star; And yet aglow with crystal snow, The hilltops shine afar. Is life today a dreary way Thy weary footsteps plod? Then lift thine eyes to heavenly skies— To radiant hills of God. — J u l ie t H o w e H a r m o n . OCTOBER 5 "Christ is all, and in all” (Col. 3:11). Jesus Christ is an armory, in which hang armour for defense, and weapons for attack. Happy is he who has learned to enter the sacred arsenal, to gird on the breastplate and helmet, and to lay his hand to spear and sword! Christ is a banqueting house, in which the tables groan beneath the weight of all that is needed for the supply of appetite and the gratification of taste. Happy is he who makes free use of the rich provision, and comes to it whenever he needs 1 Christ is a surgery, stored with all manner of re storatives and blessed elixirs; nor lacks an ointment for every wound, a cordial for every faintness, a remedy for every disease. Happy is he who is well-skilled in heavenly pharmacy and knoweth how to avail himself of His healing virtues! Christ is the jewel-room, in which the graces o.f the Christian are held in strong and safe keeping. Happy is he who knows which is the key to the massive doors, so that he can go in and out at his will, and array himself in “whatsoever things are lovely, and whatsoever things are of good report” ! With burning words like these, the saintly heart expatiates on the full ness of Christ.— F . B. M ey er . OCTOBER 6 “Go forth, and stand . . . before the Lord” (1 Ki. 19:11). The secret of the magnificent courage of Elijah lay in the fact that he recog nized the continual presence of the Lord with him. He thought that he was the only man left in Israel who was true to God—'though in this he was mistaken— and yet neither a cruel king nor a vindica tive queen or all the false prophets by whom he was confronted could shake his confidence while he realized the fact of his position in reference to his God. It is our blessed privilege, too, to stand before God. If we realized moment by moment all that this implies, what a difference it would make in our walk, our work, and our witness!— F . J. H o rsefield . OCTOBER 7 "Lord, teach us to pray” (Lk. 11:1). Many who are denied the privilege of fighting in the forefront of the battle, but who faithfully tarry in prayer at home, shall one day divide the spoil. — S p ir it u a l L if e . Prayer is an essential link in the chain of causes that lead to a revival; as much so as truth is. Some have zealously used truth to convert men, and laid very little stress on prayer. They have preached, and talked, and distributed tracts with great zeal, and then wondered why they had so little success. And the reason was that they forgot to use the other branch of the means, effectual prayer. They over

looked the fact that truth by itself will never produce the effect without the Spirit of God, and that the Spirit is given in answer to earnest prayer. — C h a r l e s G. F in n e y . OCTOBER 8 “That they might be unto me . . . for a glory” (Jer. 13:11). The final scene in which His people are to be a glory unto the Lord will be at His second advent: “when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe . . . in that day.” . . . When the Lord returns and His saints see Him face to face, the work of transfor mation . . . will be perfected: “We shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). Be it ours ever to be “look ing for and hastening the coming of the day of God” (2 Pet. 3:12, R. V., margin), anticipating, as much as God may enable us even now, that grand transfiguration, and bringing Him now, as far as He shall make it possible, the glory He desires from His own.— H u bert B rooks .
