The tax treatment of employees working partly in the UK and partly abroad has altered as the rules regarding residence, ordinary residence and the remittance basis have changed in recent years.
Tolleys have published a guidance note which should prove very helpful in clarifying the rules.

Small number of HMRC penalty letters issued in error

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has sent a small number of interim penalty letters for 2013 to 2014 in error.
HMRC explain in their announcement that the error affects a small number of employers with a particular combination of circumstances. They state that the penalty letters will be cancelled without the need for any action by affected employers.
Government reported to be considering merging income tax and NI

There is no way of assessing the accuracy of the recent media reports about a possible merger of income tax and national insurance. In the meantime the list of points in favour and against such a change published in Professional Pensions is thought provoking.
Government publishes response to the consultation on cheque imaging

In April 2014 the CIPP responded to the government’ consultation document on cheque imaging. The government has now had a chance to read and respond to the consultation and, in line with the views of CIPP members, intends preserving the right of customers to continue presenting paper cheques at bank branches, along with pressing ahead with its plans to allow cheque imaging through smartphone technology. The government will be working with stakeholders to agree a date for implementation. We will keep you updated as progress is made.
