Lasallian Mission WHY IT MATTERS TODAY

BY JESSE BRODKA ‘17

At St. Joe’s, we are guided by the values of a man who lived over 300 years ago across the ocean in France. Some may wonder what the legacy of St. John Baptist de La Salle and his Lasallian foundation have to offer us in 2025. The truth is, his mission is more relevant than ever. Here’s why we believe the Lasallian values can still resonate in today’s world and continue to shape the way we educate, lead and serve. One

Now: At St. Joe’s, we follow De La Salle’s example by providing an environment that supports diverse learning styles for our students. Whether through personalized learning plans, integrating cutting-edge technology or focusing on collaborative, hands-on experiences, we aim to equip our students with the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to succeed in an interconnected and rapidly evolving world. Three De La Salle’s mission can be a resource for us in times of global crisis. Then: In our first-floor hallway, our students walk by a quote from De La Salle: “When you encounter any type of difficulty… turn to God with confidence.” This simple yet profound reminder speaks directly to the heart of our mission today. As our students move through their daily lives, this quote serves as a source of strength and encouragement in the face of adversity. Now: In a world where we see a constant stream of challenges from the chaos of war, school shootings, political divisions or the ongoing issues of racism and climate change, it can be a lot for anyone, especially young people. It’s easy to feel discouraged but de La Salle’s words remind us to take a step back from all that stress and know that we can turn with confidence to our Lord and trust in God’s presence to guide us and strengthen us through challenging times. St. John Baptist de La Salle, please pray for us in 2025!

The Lasallian mission matters in a world of diverse learners. Then: At the heart of the Lasallian mission lies the call to create an inclusive community rooted in respect for all individuals. De La Salle believed that education should be accessible to all, regardless of their background or circumstances. He was determined to offer every student, no matter their social or economic status, the opportunity to grow, learn and contribute to society. Now: In a world that is more diverse than ever, our school draws deeply from this Lasallian principle to cultivate a sense of belonging and inclusion. As we welcome individuals from a broad spectrum of cultures, beliefs and life experiences, we continue to honor the Lasallian call to create an environment where every voice is heard and every student is valued. Two The Lasallian mission lives on through continued pedagogical innovation. Then: De La Salle’s approach to education was revolutionary for his time. He recognized that each student had unique needs, talents and challenges and he adapted his teachings to meet the needs of his students. This personalized approach to education allowed him to reach students in a way that was not only effective but transformative, setting a precedent for modern education.
