French Marigold in the landscape.

Tagetes patula nana & Tagetes triploid are the ultimate crops for the landscape. This is one of the most efficient crops if you intend to cover a very big area.

Public

5 elements of success with the Tagetes seedings.

Fast growing crop.

Sowing.

• Suggested tray size – 128 cell • Seed – place 1 seed per cell • Do I need to cover the seed?  Yes • Light is not required for the germination.

• Soil Temp: 20 ―22 0 C

Substrate type #1.

• Suitable substrate components: peat > cocopeat > wood fiber peat > rice husk > composts > natural soils. With particle size 0―5 mm. Most of available substrates is suitable for tagetes. • Add 20 % leavening agent: perlite > sand > zeolite > vermiculite • Substrate mixture examples : - 80 % cocopeat + 20 % perlite, - 60 % cocopeat + 20 % peat + 20 % perlite. - 60 % cocopeat + 20 % natural soil + 20 % perlite. - 60 % cocopeat + 20 % natural soil + 20 % vermiculite. • Every substrate is fine if you provide proper pH, antiseptic treatments or protection.

Even natural components are applicable

Public

Substrate type #2.

• You can achieve success even with natural substrate components. • But use the antiseptic treatments : - hot water / vapor application (+ 80 0 C), - chemical treatment (KMnO4 – 30―50 mg/l, propamocarb (Previcur), fludioxonil), - biological protection ( Gliocladium catenulaturm, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amylolquefaciens, Streptomyces sp. K 61, Streptomyces lydicus strain WYEC 108, Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma virens, Trichoderma asperellum, Trichoderma gamsii… ).

There are many commercially available biological product are available on the market

Feed your plants well. Feed your Tagetes young plants properly. • Provide 75―125 ppm of nitrogen (N). • You can provide proper amount of N by 0.5―0.85 g/l of 18- 5 - 18, 15 -3- 15 or similar. • Optimal EC in the water 1.5―1.7* • Optimal EC in the substrate (SME**): 0.5―0.75 mS/cm. • Don’t change EC more than 0.3 mS/cm. • Substrate and water pH: 5.8―6.2 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Feed your plants well.

* EC in the water depends on the light intensity and temperature.

Start feeding your plants when they just begin to sprout true leaves

** Saturated Media Extract.

Public

Don’t forget about Ca/Mg Make your plants strong!

Pay attention Ca and Mg fertigation. NPK fertilizers are poor with Ca and Mg

Apply Ca(NO 3 ) 2 + Mg(NO 3 ) 2 every 3

Keep pH above 5.8.

What’s happened to these plants?

• Tagetes plants are in a very depressed state due to low pH, toxic effects of iron and manganese. A bronze tint is visible on some leaves.

How to avoid this?

• Keep pH in the proper range 5.8―6.2 . • Proper Ca/Mg application will help to avoid Fe/Mn .

pH above 5.8.

Public

Avoid watering in cold.

What happened with this seedling?

• Suppressed growth of apical meristems due to overhead night watering at low temperatures.

How to avoid this?

• Don’t use overhead watering to the night.

• Increase temperature before watering.

Avoid watering in cold.

Public

Transplanting time. What is the proper stage for the Tagetes?

* Young plant production takes only 3 ―4 weeks. Two pares of true leaves is the best stage*.

Feed your Tagetes well.

• Provide 12 5―175 ppm of nitrogen. • Do not use too much phosphorus! • You can provide proper amount of N by 1 .0―1.2(1.5) g/l of 15 - 5 -30, 10-3- 25 15 - 5 -40, 18- 5 - 30, 17 - 5 - 35. • Give fertilizers with every watering (EC water : 1.2―1.5(1.7). • Optimal EC in the substrate (SME*): 1.5―2.1 mS/cm.

Feed your plants well.
