Where Were You? (CONT’D FROM PAGE 40)
be used to crush the human spirit of peoples around the world, but rather as an outlet for economic growth and peace for all countries. I had the honor of visiting Pearl Harbor with my uncle, who was there on December 7, 1941. He saw the Arizona that day with her tanks full of oil. He knew people on the Arizona. On the day of our visit, some four decades later, I watched a bubble of oil, released from her fuel tanks rise to surface and make a rainbow of colors, as he read the names of his friends who died that day. You see rainbows after a rain storm. I believe that rainbow, created by the oil drop, as a sign the storm of WWII is over. That was a reminder to me: Never forget, never quit. After the attack, Japanese General Yamamoto learned none of the aircraft carriers were in Pearl Harbor. He said, “We have awakened a sleeping giant.” And he was right. That same “giant” has been awaked again. And we will fight back. And we will win. What a beautiful sight the rainbow will be once this storm is over. But current research cannot tell us how many ideas are currently being worked on by the millions of entrepreneurial minds around the country, 24/7 to help with this crisis. The private sector will respond and provide answers, solutions and hope for the future. There will be a wave of new discoveries that will help push the economic engine of our country. We will continue to have major events in our world. Some good and some not good. This is just part of both business life and personal life. We have contingency plans in place, but they may not cover all events. As Eisenhower said, “Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.” My belief is the United States will emerge from this event stronger for it. We will return to more normal times, but lessons learned in account. My expectation is that more manufacturing will return to the United States from several countries and that we will, in the next few years, become even less dependent on strategic imports. We will look back in a few years with even greater resolve and strength. We will become an even greater manufacturing power. This power will not
