MARCH 2025
A NOTE FROM SYLVIA At TPT, we are honored and privileged to serve as a trusted storyteller that reflects and responds to the needs, aspirations and interests of our communities. From “Almanac” to “Relish “to “Minnesota Experience,” we offer unique local and statewide content, all freely available. We rely on support from local members and donors, area foundations and corporations, as well as state and federal funding. We are deeply grateful for this investment in our public service mission. One example of TPT leading the way to create national programming right here in Minnesota is “Skillsville,” our latest children’s animated series. Premiering March 3 on PBS KIDS, “Skillsville” invites kids ages 4–8 to combine career exploration with fun, allowing our young viewers to explore essential life skills such as focusing, planning and perseverance. For more on this imaginative new project, please turn to pages 6-7. March is also Women’s History Month, when we take time to reflect on women’s pivotal roles across history, culture and innovation. One program we are particularly proud to present is the debut of “Finding Her Beat” on March 24, a powerful documentary chronicling the journey of an all-female Taiko drumming troupe. As I finish this note, it is early February, and we’ve recently learned that federal funding for public media is at risk. These funds are essential in allowing us to deliver accessible local content, including critical health and safety information, across our five channels. Federal funding also supports our ability to be with you in community and to bring our programs to life with community partnerships that provide high quality, trusted resources to viewers of all ages. Thank you for your generosity to TPT. If you value the entertaining and educational programming and services TPT provides to Minnesotans, please use your voice to make sure that our elected officials in Washington, D.C. and here at home understand the critical importance of public media to local communities. Together, we have the opportunity to shape a brighter and more informed future for generations to come.

Launch Skillsville! TPT’s new children’s series explores different careers through a virtual reality video game
of media. In addition, thoughtful character design choices help create a show that better represents the diverse backgrounds of our communities. “With 'Skillsville', we wanted to create a world that feels as exciting and dynamic as the games kids already love to play. From the neon-lit city streets to the whimsical characters like Scout and the Beeples, every detail was designed to spark curiosity and maximize the fun. We also made intentional choices with our main characters to reflect the diversity of our audience, including a character that is a wheelchair user — so every child watching can see themselves as a problem-solver, a leader, or a future innovator. We hope kids not only enjoy exploring 'Skillsville' but also start to see a world of career possibilities they may never have considered before.” says Carol-Lynn Parente, “Skillsville” Co- Creator and Executive Producer. Impact of Education Programming Throughout their journeys in “Skillsville”, our characters explore a variety of careers that keep their city functioning smoothly. Presented with unique challenges related to their job, our characters practice different success skills to overcome their obstacles. During these challenges, they try different strategies to reset and figure out new ways to tackle the tasks ahead of them. Just like the characters in the series, “Skillsville” helps children in early elementary grades explore important learning areas like career exploration, executive function skills, and self-regulation strategies. “We can’t predict the careers that will exist 20 years from now for our young learners. What we can do is provide them with the strategies and skills they need to succeed right now in school that will help
Introducing “Skillsville” Cora, Dev, and Rae are 8-year-old friends who love hanging out together. But when Cora’s game designer mom asks them to test out her new virtual reality video game, the three friends get to take their playtime to a whole new level. The game is called “Skillsville!” “Skillsville” is a new children's series from TPT that follows a young trio of gamers as they launch into a videogame world where they manage a virtual city populated by a host of characters like Scout, their part dog, part dragonfly assistant, and Beeples, the city’s friendly residents. Featuring many of the visual elements you would find in a video game adventure, the setting of “Skillsville” is designed to resonate with a generation of learners who are increasingly selecting video games as their preferred choice

solidify the foundational skills they need to succeed later in life — no matter what career they decide to pursue. And if along the way they learn about some careers they’ve never heard of — a paleontologist or a city planner — great, we’ve opened a window of opportunities for their future!” says Momo Hayakawa, Ph.D., “Skillsville” Project Director.

Moving Through Menopause: Adapting to Changes By Claire B. Crompton
Stephanie Faubion, M.D., director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women's Health, explains, "We know one of the most common menopause symptoms is joint aches and that's just more recently recognized." While everyone experiences menopause symptoms differently, joint pain and stiffness may range from a minor annoyance that comes and goes to a long-term problem that can decrease women's day-to-day quality of life. Women experiencing menopause are also likely to be undergoing age-related changes such as muscle and bone loss. In some women, bone loss is worsened during menopause as estrogen levels decrease. When bones reach a certain stage of weakness, known as osteoporosis, the risk of fractures from minor falls or even performing everyday activities increases. The good news is there are effective lifestyle modifications and treatments women can talk about with their health care provider before, during and after menopause. “Staying active becomes hugely important and has to be a focus in midlife," Jordan says. She adds that exercise can help improve muscle strength, optimize bone health, help metabolism and keep women healthy and active longer. Jordan reminds women, "The message should not be, 'Welcome to midlife and welcome to old age: You are meant to feel bad the rest of your life.'" By paying attention to and understanding how their bodies are changing during midlife, women can instead become empowered to take steps to feel their best during menopause and beyond.
During midlife and menopause, many women may experience often-unrecognized changes that impact their musculoskeletal system that includes muscles, tendons, joints and bones. It is estimated that "70% of midlife women will experience a new onset of musculoskeletal pain," according to Diedra R. Manns, a certified menopause health coach. She explains this can be related to the estrogen depletion that occurs during menopause. Although there can be other causes of musculoskeletal pain, Kathleen Jordan, M.D., chief medical officer of Midi Health, says that menopause should be kept in mind, especially if the pain happens around the time of other symptoms of menopause such as a change in menstrual periods or hot flashes.

Meet Cute with Mary Engelbreit By Nancy Monson
Mary Engelbreit is one of the most successful and prolific illustrators in America. For over 40 years, she's put out a dizzying array of calendars, cards, mugs, magnets and other types of merchandise featuring her whimsical drawings and inspirational quotes. With over 2,500+ manufactured and licensed products and a large social media following, Engelbreit, 72, is notable for her success because she didn't go to art school and didn't go to business school, yet she's developed a unique and recognizable artistic style and built a small empire that pulls in around $4 million a year. That's a rare feat for a working artist.
Born and raised in St. Louis, where her Mary Engelbreit Studio is based, Engelbreit got her first job at an art supply store. Her next job was at a small advertising agency where she learned about business, contracts and how to approach a career. "I don't think I would have learned those things in art school," she says. At the age of 22, she officially began her career as a freelance illustrator, creating the now-familiar, nostalgia-laden greeting cards depicting families and pets. After 30 years of sticking to sweet, safe topics, in 2014 Engelbreit decided to speak out against gun violence after teenager Michael Brown was killed by police in Missouri. In a bold leap of faith, she posted a drawing on her Facebook page titled "No one should have to teach their children this in the USA," and braced for the impact. "I thought I had ruined my business because it caused a lot of backlash and many people unfollowed me on social media," she recalls, "but then I gained many more followers than I had before." Today, she regularly conveys her beliefs through a line of Social Justice cards that urge kindness and inclusion. Of them, she says, "I'd like to think that people are basically good and good will prevail. But the problems today are so dire, you can't disconnect from them. You have to stay aware and do what you can — which I'm trying to do with these cards."
