DURING WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TIMES IN THE IRISH CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, MARK O’ROURKE TOOK A BIG STEP INTO THE UNKNOWN… The early days
A fter talking through the risks and options with his wife Pauline, and with her support, Mark O’Rourke founded M&P Mechanical in 2011. With nearly 30 years of experience in the industry at the time and a long list of contacts to work through, he set about getting some work. Construction had very limited activity in 2011, maintenance and small housing upgrades was where the work could be found. Frank Fahy, of Shannon Homes Dublin had a good relationship with Mark from previous years and having heard that he was looking for work, reached out to him. By the middle of 2012, Mark had a team of four working with him, and things were only getting started. Shannon Homes Dublin had planning for a 101-unit apartment complex in Stillorgan. When
Frank asked him to take on the project in 2013, it seemed like a mountain to climb. However, never afraid of taking on a challenge, Mark rolled up his sleeves and started pricing and planning the works. EXPANSION McElligott Consultanting Engineers were tasked with the design of St. Raphael’s on the Upper Kilmaccud Road, which became Mark’s first District Heating Project. He expanded his team at that point, most of whom now hold senior project and management roles at M&P Mechanical. At the centre of the District Heating System was a commercial plantroom, and needing someone with a background in commercial projects, Mark hired Anthony O’Conaill who is now the company’s Chief Operations Officer. M&P Mechanical quickly streamlined
the District Heating System installation process and by 2015, the steadily growing company was working on its fifth District Heating Project. Looking for new opportunities to grow, Mark and Anthony headed to Nenagh for ABP Foods to carry out a complete building upgrade. With TJ Collier as the Project Manager, M&P delivered a full stainless- steel design and install over the course of 24 months without the plant ever fully stopping. The company now had a plan. Mark set out his targets, restructured the company in 2016, and set up a Dublin office to service the lengthening list of clients. This client base now included some well-known names like Shannon Homes Dublin, Cosgrave Developments, ABP Food Group, Shannon Homes Drogheda and Urban Life Developments.
