OSTEOARTHRITIS OR MENISCUS TEAR? DON’T GET SURGERY YET!

I f you’ve been sidelined by osteoarthritis or a tear of your meniscus, it’s likely that your doctor — and everyone else — will tell you to get surgery. But some new research shows that other treatments, like physical therapy, may be just as effective as going under the knife. Across the globe, it’s estimated that more than 250 million people suffer from knee osteoarthritis, making it one of the leading causes of disability in the world. In America alone, more than 1 individual in 10 will suffer from the disorder at one time in their life, with more than a quarter of people over 50 years of age suffering from some sort of meniscal tear.

esteemed British Medical Journal released recommendations strongly discouraging the use of surgery to fix either issue, instead steering patients toward noninvasive treatments such as “watchful waiting, weight loss if overweight,” and “a variety of interventions led by physical therapists.” This shift in the medical field comes after numerous studies determined that although arthroscopic surgery generally results in a positive outcome for patients, the long- term results of noninvasive exercises and treatments show they’re just as effective. That means receiving expensive, potentially painful surgery and spending weeks off your feet just isn’t necessary when correcting a serious issue like meniscal tears or osteoarthritis.

While it’s important to trust your physician and listen carefully to their recommendations, you should also be educated and understand
