Paul was probably influenced to a certain degree by the stoic philos ophers in his use of the word trans lated “content,” which according to its derivation actually means “self-suf ficient.” The stoics made a good deal out of the virtue of self-sufficiency or inde pendence of external circumstances. They held that a man should be suffi cient in and unto himself in all things. When asked who was the wealthiest, Socrates said, “He who is content with least, for self-sufficiency is nature’s wealth.” . . . But, though Paul uses the Stoic word, he has more than the Stoic idea. He expressly dis claims this mere self - sufficiency: “Not that we are sufficient of our selves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God” (2 Cor. 3:5). Kobertson. The verb translated “I learned the se cret” is quite different from the one translated “learn” in the preceding verse. The stem from which it is de rived originally meant to “shut” or “close,” as when one is blindfolded.
