tence for emphasis, to prepare the way for his positive affirmation: “For I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therein to be content” (v. 11 ASV). Paul was probably influenced to a certain degree by the stoic philos­ ophers in his use of the word trans­ lated “content,” which according to its derivation actually means “self-suf­ ficient.” The stoics made a good deal out of the virtue of self-sufficiency or inde­ pendence of external circumstances. They held that a man should be suffi­ cient in and unto himself in all things. When asked who was the wealthiest, Socrates said, “He who is content with least, for self-sufficiency is nature’s wealth.” . . . But, though Paul uses the Stoic word, he has more than the Stoic idea. He expressly dis­ claims this mere self - sufficiency: “Not that we are sufficient of our­ selves, to account anything as from ourselves; but our sufficiency is from God” (2 Cor. 3:5). Kobertson. The verb translated “I learned the se­ cret” is quite different from the one translated “learn” in the preceding verse. The stem from which it is de­ rived originally meant to “shut” or “close,” as when one is blindfolded.
