THE

WORDS FROM THE CHAIRMAN

It is with great pleasure that I write to officially welcome you to the release of the 2018 edition of the Asian Wine Review. Now in its 3rd consecutive year the review platform has established itself as a credible, go-to source for wines produced on the greater Asian continent. The initiative's mission to advance the quality of wines by providing winemakers with a benchmarking arena remains uncompromised with the careful selection of exceptional panel judges and panel chairs.

2018 is highlighted with notable improvements from returning wineries whilst the review also welcomed several first time entrants from new regions and brands. Witnessing first hand the growth in interest by wine producers is a wonderful testament that continues to reiterate the importance of this publication to the greater wine community. The ongoing success story of this publication is marked this year with the participation of Wine-Searcher as a premium sponsor. Wine-Searcher is a powerful database and search engine that connects the world to specific wines and prices from merchants around the world. This partnership shows the growing importance of information required on the wines produced from Asia and the need for up-to-date production and market data. The involvement of Wine-Searcher is highly welcomed as an incredibly beneficial advantage that participating wineries will receive in due course. I would like to conclude by expressing my sincerest gratitude to all our other key sponsors, venue partners, wineries, governing bodies and judges for their continued support of the Asian Wine Review. A special thanks must go to the editorial and operations team at The Flying Winemaker for their continued belief in Asian wine production, without their support the review would not have continued to be the success it is today. Thank you!

Happy exploring!

Eddie McDougall, Chairman of Asian Wine Review

1

WHY ASIA MATTERS

The Asian Wine Review is playing a vital role in getting the Asian wine story out to both the fast growing regional wine audience and to the global wine audience - by providing disciplined reviews of wines from the region that are permitting more confident experimentation by consumers and the trade in local and international markets. The wine industry in the region has been evolving strongly, and modernising, over the past 30 years. There are now over 1,000 Wine Writer, Member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Wine Titles Co. DENIS GASTIN

wineries in East Asia alone. Most of them are in China, which has the longest wine history in Asia. Japan’s winemaking dates back to the late 1800s and there are now more than 200 wineries nationally, covering practically every Prefecture. The 3rd largest producing country in East Asia is India, now with over 90 wineries. There is modern viticulture and winemaking in Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and Myanmar. A small number of the Asian wineries have stunned judging panels worldwide with gold medal and trophy winning wines and now Asian Wine Review brings them, as well as less well-known Asian wine producers from a wider spectrum of the regional wine industry, into sharper focus for wine lovers everywhere.

2

RONNY LAU

Chairman of Hong Kong Wine & Spirits Writers Association

If you think Europe, America and Australasia are the only continents producing wines, wake up! Asian wine has already created a buzz in the wine world. In terms of quantity, China is now number 7 on the Top 10 list, producing more wines than Chile or Germany. In terms of quality, I found more and more wines that are no slouch when they come to blind tasting with fine wines from France, Italy or Spain.

Thanks to the huge investment put into vineyards and cellars and the hard work of winemakers, Asian wine is no more a gimmick. Apart from China, Japan is also a wine producing country with more than 1,000 years of history. Adding to the list are Thailand, India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Korea, etc. making wines from international grape varieties and some unique Asian ones, such as Alphonse LaVallee, Koshu, Muscat Bailey A , Belgia and more. It's time to explore the potential of Asian wines and enjoy the diversity of the world of wines.

IVY NG

Publisher of Drinks Business

The earliest archaeological evidence of winemaking has recently been traced back 8,000 years following tests of clay jars, uncovered near modern day Tbilisi in Georgia, which showed telltale signs of having once contained fermented grapes. Impressive and exciting as this find is, it is in fact China that is still deemed the birthplace of the oldest alcoholic beverage in human history, a concoction based on rice, honey and fruit, that was first drunk some 9,000 years ago. Wine had held an important place in the socio-economic development

of Asian cultures, Eastern and Western, until it fell into neglect amidst the rise of modern day Europe. The rebirth of winemaking in Asia over the past few decades has given rise to a new generation of young and ambitious winemakers. Whether they are reviving winemaking in historic centres, with the help of modern innovations, or championing winemaking in emerging regions in Asia. Unencumbered by the fetters of tradition or regulations, Asian winemakers are overcoming climatic challenges and experimenting with indigenous and classic grape varieties to create wine styles to marry the diverse flavours and cuisines. The Asian Wine Review reinforces the message that Asia matters in winemaking and celebrates the zealous efforts of modern winemakers in Asia.

3

HOW THE AWR IS JUDGED

What wines are eligible for the 2018 review ?

1

More than 200 wines from over 50 different Asian wineries were blind tasted for the 3rd edition of the Asian Wine Review. Wineries decide to submit as many wines, or as few, to review as they choose.

Where did the wines for the AWR come from ?

2

Samples were submitted directly by the wineries. The wineries in this year’s edition are spread across ten Asian nations: China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Vietnam, Turkey, Georgia, Taiwan and Thailand.

Who reviewed the AWR submissions ?

3

A tasting panel of nine was chosen to blind taste the selection of wines submitted to the AWR. The selection of this year’s panel took into account key representation from an all-encompassing perspective of the wine industry. Leaders in the wine industry from on-premise, media and production were equally represented. Full details on the judging panel can be found on page 7.

Where did we review the wines ?

4

The tasting took place at the Vinoteca Lab in HK PolyU-SHTM under controlled conditions to eliminate bias. Wines were presented at optimum temperatures following careful storage, and judges were unaware of participating brands until after completion of all tasting.

4

Why strictly a blind tasting ?

5

Asia as a whole, already battles misconceptions of its wine offerings. The aim of the AWR is not to promote wines that spend the most value on marketing. Instead, we aim to assist consumers and fellow wine trade workers in confidently identifying the best wines produced in Asia. Therefore, our judges adhere to blind tasting rules to uphold this value. Judges are only told the grape varietal and vintage. Winery names and regions are not revealed, so that price nor the reputation of the winery has any influence on ratings or evaluation.

How were the wines tasted ?

6

The wines were arranged by category: sparkling, white, rosé, red and sweet. Within each category they were then arranged by varietal, starting with the lightest through to the heaviest (based on standard expressions). Finally, each varietal was arranged by sugar content and percentage of alcohol (based on provided technical information). Judges were split into three groups, with an appointed Panel Chair. Group discussion was encouraged so that group members came to a unanimous score per wine as recorded by the Panel Chair. Wines to be judged were hidden behind a wall from the judges at all times.

5

INTRODUCTION

China has the world’s largest population, with 1.4 billion people, but it is also becoming one of the largest markets for imported wine. As the size of middle class consumers increase, so does disposable income. The Chinese now buy wine for personal consumption rather than as a gift, leading to the increasing interest into variety and style of wine. The growing Chinese wine market has been labelled as exciting, fresh and full of potential. This mirrors that of the Chinese winemaking industry. With the aid of government funding and expertise from foreign winemakers, production has been exponentially increasing in quantity and quality.

INFORMATION

Treaty Port Vineyards is the first all-organic fine wine producer in China's Shandong peninsula. Using a combination of French and Australian wine-growing expertise, the 18 hectare vineyard grows 13 grape varieties without artificial pesticides. Varieties include both Red and White. The wine produced is of an exceptionally high quality - we restrict yields, only pick when grapes are fully ripened and use only the best of our crop to make our wines. Established in 1861, the treaty ports of Chefoo and Dengzhou on the Shandong peninsula (now called Yantai and Penglai) were an early step in pioneering trade links between China and the West. Our wine is exclusively made from grapes hand-picked on the granite slopes of nearby Qiushan, in a similarly pioneering international effort to bring you the best that China can produce.

INTRODUCTION

Ningxia is China’s largest and most talked-about wine region. It has approximately 40,000 hectares of vineyards, which is the second largest in the world right behind Bordeaux. The government is strongly supportive of the winemaking industry and the number of wineries is expected to grow two-fold in the coming years. The dry growing climate, with the combination of vineyard locations near the foothills of the mountain ranges, makes for optimal conditions for growing Bordeaux varietals.
