a group or organization, because it carries many people to a destination. A large vehicle has one driver. Even an airplane with a pilot and co-pilot only has one person flying the plane. This image of a passenger vehicle with one driver is a great metaphor for the way a business or organization functions. The CEO, President or owner is the driver. If that CEO wants peers within his or her company, s/he may need to teach people to see the way s/he does, and to think the way s/he does. Some CEOs find this challenging, because they expect other people to already have these skills. But the CEO is the leader because he or she has a vision, can perceive lines of probability, and thinks in creative and innovative ways. In my career, I’ve been the president of two interna- tional organizations, a director, and a supervisor of multi- ple people. I used to think, “it’s lonely at the top,” but that changed when I discovered that teaching people to un- derstand the ideal of the organization and guiding them to contribute to that ideal with their unique strengths made for fulfilling and productive associations. I hold an image of a ladder, with my teachers and men- tors above me extending a hand to guide me to ascend and improve, while I reach a hand to those below me so they can move up too. In time, we all reach the top, using our special skills, talents, and abilities. As leaders we’re called upon to be visionary, to see things that other people don’t. We need to make decisions based on future goals. The future is never predestined, so although we can foresee future probabilities, sometimes we need to make creative leaps. We are responsible for the results. Being an effective leader means believing in our ability to hold in mind the best interest of our employees, the best interest of the company, and to coordinate those. Great leaders know what they value. They know how to communicate those values clearly. They continually re-assess if those values work for everyone involved in the company or organization. In order to do that, leaders need to listen to the people who work in the company. That can be hard, especially when employees criticize or complain. But good leaders want to learn and grow. They need to be humble and to recognize that some of their employees might have better ideas or new ways of doing things that could improve the organization. Part of the loneliness leaders experience comes from wanting to always be right, to have the best ideas or to keep procedures the way they have always been. Some- times keeping things the same is the wisest choice, but not always. We all enjoy having people with whom we can create and share. The sense that “we’re in this together” empow-
