ers everyone to be their best. When people work just for a paycheck, doing what’s expected and no more, they might not be enthusiastic about their work and may not particu- larly care about the company or goals of the leader. Even if they’re responsible, their presence can drag down other people. Here are some tips for leaders to engage their employ- ees and to guide them to become peers: 1. A great leader has a personal ideal and an ideal for the company or organization. Clearly communicating the company’s ideal (sometimes called a mission statement or a vision statement) helps those who work within the orga- nization to be aligned with a common purpose. Exception- al leaders learn about their employees’ ideals and guide them to coordinate their individual ideals with that of the company. 2. Recognize that responsibility brings freedom. Many people believe that responsibility is a burden, when in fact, the more responsible we are, the more freedom we have. Think about the freedom that comes from having a driver’s license. Having a car is a responsibility. We must care for it, learn the rules of the road, and pay for gas and insurance. But driving and owning a car gives us the freedom to go where we want to go, when we want to go there. This is one benefit of being a leader. We get to make more deci- sions and therefore have the freedom to determine the di- rection of the company. Sharing responsibility with others in the company means that we give them greater freedom and we get to share in that too. 3. Realize that some people project onto anyone in a position of authority their unresolved issues with parents and previous “authority figures” in their lives. Learning to be objective and perhaps offering therapeutic resources for employees can be worthwhile. As leaders we need to learn to see this for what it is rather than taking it personal- ly. Leaders may also benefit from receiving counseling or mentorship to aid them understand these dynamics. 4. Be Humble. People have different talents, abilities, and skills. Most organizations have people working there who have ideas about how the company can function bet- ter. Rather than cutting those employees off because we’re afraid they might make waves, allowing time to listen and receive their input may prove valuable to the organization. We might hear some suggestions that are different from those we’ve considered. Perhaps some employees with good ideas will become the next leaders in the company. 5. Learn about the people who work within the compa- ny. There are different assessments, like the MBTI (Myers Briggs), the DISC Profile, the Kolbe scale, the Enneagram, and Clifton Strengths Finder. Any of these can be useful for discovering the temperament and strengths of the peo- ple in the company. Then we know what they need and can guide them into a position or role that best suits their abilities and communication style. This also increases em-
