budget is necessary to maintain existing library services to residents and also deal with some necessary expenses for furni- ture replacement and acquiring new books, DVDs, and other library loan items. Last year the library staff was increased by one more part-time employee. Two more part-time staff position additions are plan- ned for this year. But the delegation noted that, even with these three new part-time positions, the library is understaffed for dealing with the amount of work maintaining services for residents. The delegation noted that inflation has added to the cost of buying new books and other resource materials, lighting and heating for the library, and the expenses involved in providing various activities in addition to traditional lending services for books and other items. Some of those extra activities include scheduling special events like hosting visiting authors for public readings. The delegation argued that increasing the library budget is necessary “to continue to guarantee a good quality service” otherwise
Hawkesbury council members have “heavy reading” to do to help deter- mine how to answer a demand for increasing the Hawkesbury public library’s budget. “It’s a significant increase,” said Mayor Robert Lefebvre, during a phone interview following last month’s council session. A delegation for the Hawkesbury Public Library presented a report to council Decem- ber 8, outlining the proposed 2026 budget for the library and arguments why a large increase in the library’s budget is necessary. The proposed 2026 library budget is $737,922.32, compared to the 2025 bud- get of $657,970. The proposed increase is almost $80,000, which includes a $17,000 increase to cover salary raises for library staff. This salary increase is required under the terms of the current contract between the library and its staff. Library officials told council that “a substantial increase” to the public library

Les fonds recueillis permettent notamment de financer des projets visant à améliorer les espaces de vie, à offrir des équipements spécialisés et à soutenir des initiatives favorisant le bien-être physique, émotionnel et social des résidents. Ce don survient à un moment charnière, alors que la Fondation approche de la der- nière phase de sa campagne majeure de collecte de fonds. Les responsables lancent d’ailleurs un appel à la population afin de maintenir cet élan de solidarité. « Chaque don, quel qu›en soit le montant, nous rapproche de notre objectif et a un impact significatif sur la vie de nos résidents », souligne la Fondation. First period saw neither team able to get pucks in the net. Second period proved the deciding session between the two teams with the Hawks getting two goals to the Senators’ three. Hawkesbury’s Joshua Agnese put the Hawks on the scoreboard first in second period with a goal after seven minutes of ice time. Assisting him on the goal were Anthony Sergeyev and Matthew Itzkovitz. The first weekend of games of the new year in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) were good for the Hawkesbury Hawks. The second wee- kend weekend of the new year proved to be the exact opposite. The Pembroke Lumber Kings beat the Hawkesbury Hawks 5-1 last Friday night at the Robert Hartley Sports Complex. The Hawks got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Danny Kananga at the midpoint of first period. Assisting Kananga on the scoring were Edward Downey and Matthew Itzkovitch. The Lumber Kings took over the scoring then with two first-period goals and then

The Hawks host the Smith Falls Bears this Friday then head to Carleton Place Sunday afternoon. Rockets grounded Sunday afternoon at home the Cougars shut down the North Dundas Rockets 9-1. Garrett Cunning scored the first two goals of the game for the Cougars with one puck in the net early in first period and the second one five minutes into second period. Assisting Cunning on his first goal were Liam Lynn and Avery MacCuaig, with Alexandre Chenier providing help on the second goal. Nolan Macmillan gave the Cougars their third point of the game close to the mid-mark in second period. Helping him out were Xavier Plante and Connor Cook. Almost a minute after Macmillan’s goal, Bruno Laframboise added another point to the Cougars’ total, with help from Chenier and Mike Fournier. Caden Holmes got the Rockets on the scoreboard with a power-play goal in the last five minutes of second period. Assisting him were Dawson Coleman and Luke Griffin. Cody Horner advanced Vankleek Hill by another point in the last two minutes of the period, with assists from Cunning and Jacob Crete. Fournier, with help from Laframboise, punched in a power-play goal with six seconds on the period time clock. Third period saw Cody Horner pop a goal into the Rockets’ net near the mid-mark. Assisting him were Maxime Carrière and Johnny Kirby. The final goal of the night was a power-play point in the last half of third period from Drew Cunning, with help from Crete and Ryder Hill. The Vankleek Hill Cougars got a break on their Saturday night home game as the Kanata Kings decided to forfeit because they were so far behind on the scoreboard. The Cougars crowned the Kings 7-1 at the Vankleek Hill Arena in a game that saw the home team scoring almost without opposition against Kanata. First period goals all belonged to the Cougars starting with the first one by Jacob Crete 30 seconds into the start of the game. Assisting him were Garrett Cunning and Avery MacCuaig. Liam Lynn fired in the second point for Vankleek Hill with a short-handed goal in the last five minutes of the period, assisted by Cunning and Mael Gendron. Twenty seconds after Lynn’s goal, Nikolas Mayer added another point to the Vankleek Hill side of the scoreboard. Mayer got help from Mike Fournier and Bruno Laframboise on the goal. Laframboise scored unassisted midway through the second period. In the last two minutes of the period, Xavier Plante popped in the fifth goal for the Cougars, with help from Cunning and Nolan Macmillan.
