SPRING & SUMMER CALVING PROGRAMS
Our entire cattle operation is divided into a spring calving herd and a summer calving herd. There are several reasons why we operate this way; • To spread out our labor—we can work twice as many cattle by splitting the timing of our labor. • To match our pasture resources. Some pastures are better matched for cattle to be up in the mountains and inaccessible in the summer months. We like to have those calved out, branded, and rebred AI before the end of May. • To lower our bull needs. We use AI or Embryo Transfer on all of our females. We also expect our herd sires to breed in both seasons—requiring a true test of fertility, structure and fleshing ability. This group is then branded, and rebred AI & ET and turned out to summer range about the time we start weaning and preg checking the spring group. After the spring calving herd is turned up to summer pasture, we start calving the summer herd.
