RATIOS —

In the footnotes you will see we put a lot of credit on ratios; especially birth and weaning ratios. Ratios compare the calves in the same management group or environment. A Ratio of 100 is average for the group. For example a birth ratio of 95 indicates a lower than average birth weight. A weaning ratio of 105 or 110, show a calf that weaned well above the other calves raised the same way. • One reason we like to look at ratios is because we have multiple calving seasons. The ratios are a much better way to compare calves raised in different calving seasons and different environments than looking at weights. • We do not want to increase our cow size. Growth EPD averages keep increasing and so does mature cow size. We do not necessarily want to have a weaning weight EPD in the top 5% of the breed, but a ratio of 105 shows that for our cow size that calf weaned well above average . We don’t want to ride the ‘Roller coaster’ of chasing EPDs.
