& WHY WE USE THEM
• The flip side! Ratios are also used in calculating EPDs. In theory an extreme ratio of 125 on weaning would seem good, and that is a way some “good” numbers are ‘built’. But, the way we see it we do not want cows on the lower side that are poor enough to make the top cow ratio 125. If the bottom half of the herd is made up of poor cattle, it makes the top half look extremely good from a numbers per-spective. Our theory on this is that we want a good, solid, consistent herd of cows with each one pulling her weight and doing her work. We don’t expect to have wild or extreme ratios because we hope our herd is too consistent for those extremes.
