CALVING EASE SCORES

We have updated our Calving Ease Scores this year to a scale of 1-5 to better describe each bull. These scores are located in each bull’s information on the right side, at the bottom of the first table. Our scores for each bull range from 1 – 5. 1 being recommended for only cows, to 5 being elite calving ease. We feel that sometimes the numbers can be hard to equate to what you can expect when the due date is here. To come up with our scores we do take into account the CED and BW EPD’s, but we go a few steps farther. We look at our cows that we know well, and study her pedigree 3 generations back looking at calving and birth weight tendencies. We also look at how the sire has worked in our herd. We look at trends and variations on each side of the pedigree. We are very conservative on the calving ease since we calve all of our cows on the range without assistance. It takes consistent calving ease on both sides of the pedigree to get our 4 or 5 status. I believe our 3 scores are bulls that some people would use on heifers, and some people only on cows, depending on your calving situation and your cattle. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like more information on this system of rating our bulls.
