Canada Raises Recycled Content In Packaging

The Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Coun- cil (PPEC) has announced the results of its 16th biennial Recy- cled Content Survey. Every two years, PPEC surveys Canadian paper mills about their paper packaging import and export shipments, to determine the average recycled content used to make paper-based packaging products in Canada. The average recycled content of domestic Canadian ship- ments of the three major packaging grades — container- board (used to make corrugated boxes), boxboard (used to make boxboard cartons), and kraft paper (used to make paper bags) — is 81.7 percent, according to the 2020 sur- vey, up from 73.5 percent in 2018.The average has steadily increased from 47 percent in 1990, when PPEC first started collecting recycled content data from Canadian paper mills. 2020 PPEC Recycled Content Survey Key Findings: • Total Canadian paper mill shipments: 3.37 million tons; • Total recycled content shipments to domestic and ex- port markets: 2.35 million tons; • Average recycled content of domestic shipments for all three major packaging grades: 81.7 percent; • Average recycled content for domestic shipments of boxboard, which is used to make cereal or shoeboxes: 79.8 percent; and • Average recycled content for domestic shipments of containerboard, which is used to make corrugated shipping boxes: 86.5 percent.

Eastman Forms Partnership With Procter & Gamble Cincinnati, Ohio-based Procter & Gamble (P&G) has en- tered into an agreement with Eastman, headquartered in Kingsport,Tennessee, to use Eastman Renew materials in se- lect products and packaging. The move supports both com- panies’ goals to reduce the use of virgin plastic from fossil resources. Procter & Gamble has set a goal for 100 percent of its consumer packaging to be recyclable or reusable by 2030.Additionally, the companies will collaborate on advo- cacy initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on virgin plastic to better enable a circular economy. Eastman Renew materials are made through Eastman’s molecular recycling technologies that use plastic scrap. P&G and Eastman also plan to collaborate on initiatives addressing the infrastructure needed to increase plastic re- cycling rates. Eastman and Procter & Gamble will be working with spe- cific facilities to change processes and behaviors so that more material is collected, sent to Eastman to be turned into new material and then sent to P&G and its consumers. The companies say these efforts will complement the current recycling streams in the United States and enable additional recycling options for consumers. The two com- panies will work to expand the collection of hard-to-recycle plastics. The companies say the expanded recycling streams will be used to create new materials through Eastman’s mo- lecular recycling technologies.

Pratt Invests $400 Million In New Recycled Paper Mill Pratt Industries plans to open a new $400 million paper mill in Henderson, Kentucky. Pratt plans to build two facilities totaling 1.15 million square feet along Kentucky Highway 425 in Henderson County. The company’s initial investment will support the construction of a 450,000-square-foot paper mill that will manufacture 100-percent-recycled products. Pratt plans to make a future investment to construct a 700,000-square- foot corrugator plant to produce corrugated sheet and box- es using paper sourced from the new mill. Pratt plans to begin construction on the new mill in March 2022, with completion slated for the fall of 2023. The corrugator facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. As a result of these investments, the new mill will add about 320 new full-time jobs to the area along with about 700 jobs related to the construction of the facility. The cor- rugator will add about 200 jobs to the area. This latest initiative brings the company’s total cumulative investment value in the United States to about $10 billion since Pratt came to the United States 30 years ago. The company last added a paper mill inWapakoneta,Ohio, in 2019. That mill also makes 100-percent-recycled paper and consumes old corrugated containers and mixed paper. Currently, Pratt Industries operates paper mills in Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, New York and Ohio. The company em- ploys more than 10,000 people in 30 states. Pratt is a sister company toAustralia-basedVisy,which was founded in 1948 and employs about 7,000 people. BHS To Supply MRF System To America Waste Control Oklahoma-based American Waste Control (AWC) has se- lected Eugene, Oregon-based Bulk Handling Systems (BHS) to supply a replacement of the company’s single-stream recycling system that was heavily damaged by a fire this spring. Olympic Medals Made From Recycled Materials Medals awarded at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics were made of recycled electrical devices. According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), approximately 78,985 tons of discarded devices were col- lected. This includes about 6.21 million used mobile phones, along with digital cameras, handheld games and laptops, all of which were then classified, dismantled and melted down by highly trained contractors. The effort was part of a collection program called the To- kyo 2020 Medal Project, which began in 2017.The project attracted donations and support from 1,300 educational in- stitutions and 2,100 electronics retail stores across Japan. Donation boxes also were strategically placed across Japan for local donations, according to the IOC. Up to 90 percent of Japanese cities, towns and villages participated by setting up donation collection sites where Japanese citizens donated their old electronic devices, re- ports technology publication ZME Science. Through the initiative, the Tokyo 2020 Medal Project col- lected 70 pounds of gold, 7,700 pounds of silver and 4,850 pounds of bronze. The gold alone derived from the project is worth some $2 million, according to ZME Science. This is not the first time Olympic medals have been made from recycled materials. In 2016, the Rio Olympics awarded bronze and silver medals that were made from 30 percent recycled materials, according to the IOC, while medals for the 2019 Winter Olympics also featured recycled-content medals. Indorama Progresses Toward Bottle Recycling Goal Global chemical company and polyethylene terephthal- ate (PET) recycler Indorama Ventures Public Co. Ltd. (IVL), headquartered in Bangkok,Thailand, has announced its sec- ond-quarter 2021 financial results, reporting record core earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortiza- tion (EBITDA) of $477 million. This is a 30 percent quar- ter-over-quarter increase. The company said it is forecasting similar growth in the second half of 2021 and in 2022 as global vaccination programs spur positive sentiment. In its “2019 Annual Report,”Aloke Lohia, group CEO said, social and political pressure on single-use plastics “creates a tremendous opportunity for IVL to enlarge our recycling investments and create a positive impact on global circular economy initiatives.” The company also set a goal that it would recycle 50 bil- lion bottles per year by 2025. Its recent acquisition of CarbonLite’s PET recycling asset inTexas got the company 3 billion bottles closer to reaching that target, while its announced greenfield recycling facility in Karawang, Indonesia, will further its progress toward that goal by almost 2 billion bottles annually. Also in the second quarter of the year, the company launched its Deja Carbon Neutral PET pellet that is made with renewable energy, lo- cally sourced materials and low-impact water transport.
