Meet the Apprentices of 2023

Apprentice of the Year – Yorkshire & Trent Jordan Hopkinson — James P Spencer Ltd

Training supplier: Nottingham College Trade: Bricklaying Qualifications: Asbestos awareness

Characteristics Committed: He has never missed a day at college and his work is always up to date. Reliable: He’s always on site first in the morning, often 20 minutes early. Leader: He guides a more recently hired apprentice, sharing knowledge about the trade and the business.

Apprentice of the Year – Central Region

Apprentice of the Year – London Joseph Powell — McLoughlin Decorating Limited

Seth Andrew Hoskin Barton — Neways Group Ltd

Training supplier: New City College Hackney Trade: Painting and decorating Qualifications: CSCS green card, PPE, ladder awareness, working at height, manual handling, slips, trip and fall hazards, mobile aluminium towers, COSHH awareness, first aid basics, H&S employee responsibilities, housekeeping (construction), wallpapering, spills, fire safety awareness, site induction - health, safety & environment, waste disposal, stress management, silica, and violence in the workplace Characteristics Studious: He has an exemplary attendance record at college and performs well. Attentive: He is eager to learn from his mentor. Disciplined: He is assertive and driven to succeed.

Training supplier: City College Norwich Trade: Carpentry

Qualifications: Army Cadet Corporal, first aid, studying for a diploma in psychology to support colleagues and clients

Characteristics Tenacious: He has overcome many challenges at a young age. Reliable: He has a 100% attendance record

at college. Innovative: He encouraged a client to use leftover

materials from their renovation project to create furniture.

Apprentice of the Year – Southern Counties Kenny Thompson — Biocraft Ltd Training supplier: Reading College/Activate Enterprise Trade: Carpentry

Apprentice of the Year – Wales Jordan Gay — Bluestone Builders Ltd Training supplier: Pembrokeshire College Trade: Level 3 carpentry Qualifications: Level 1 Diploma Carpentry and Joinery, Level 2 Diploma in Joinery, Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry, Level 2 NVQ in Site Carpentry Characteristics Punctual: He has never been late to work. Enthusiastic: He’s always eager to help his co-workers Independent: His experienced carpentry mentors trust him to do difficult work on his own.

Qualifications: Set to achieve NVQ2 in July and will continue onto the NVQ3 qualification, general H&S – CITB site safety plus, asbestos awareness, emergency first aid at work, manual handling, working at height, abrasive wheels

Characteristics Driven: He began as a labourer but within weeks set on the path of becoming a carpenter. Mature: He manages his time well and is always consistent with his college work. Enthusiastic: He arrives on site with a smile on his face and a desire to work with a positive can-do attitude.
