NI Construction Group

joins roundtable Attending an industry roundtable event as part of the NI Construction Group, FMB Northern Ireland Director Gavin McGuire highlighted the current challenges stemming from the ongoing absence of a Northern Ireland Executive. He gave feedback on how the industry has tried to adapt to a challenging market. There were representatives from several government departments including, finance, economy, education, health, infrastructure, as well as from NI Water and Translink.

The sessions focused on our calls to assist members, noting that the public sector procurement process needs to be more inclusive of SME contractors. Senior civil servants said they appreciate the feedback we provide from members and the wider industry. The series of roundtables will take place quarterly, serving as a vital link to policy-makers as Northern Ireland continues to function without the Executive in place.

FMB Chief Executive Brian Berry at the Joining the Dots conference in Cork

At the invitation of the British Embassy in Dublin, FMB Chief Executive Brian Berry presented at the ‘Joining the Dots’ retrofit conference in Cork, which provided a platform to promote the value of members’ high-quality work and customer service across the UK. The conference included policy-makers, elected representatives and industry colleagues speaking about the challenges around skills, pipelines and finance. The panel discussions, which Berry participated in, stressed how construction firms' commitment to delivering programmes needs to be encouraged with a pipeline of work and finance. The networking discussions allowed Berry and Northern Ireland Director Gavin McGuire to make new contacts who are eager to help more SMEs and FMB members deliver construction works for public sector clients. Local authorities must appreciate quality contractors

installation and maintenance of solar, wind and hydroelectric systems; energy storage technologies; installation of smart renewable energy systems; and retrofitting techniques, including roof, wall, and floor insulation.
