From input to impact: “Home is Where the Art is” resident exhibition

Home is Where the Art is is an annual resident art competition run by the Community Engagement team in Victoria. The initiative invites resident artists to share their talents in an inclusive way and showcase their work in an exhibition. In 2024 the Community Engagement Team have worked closely with the Resident Artist Committee, a small group of talented Housing Choices resident artists, to ensure that the competition and exhibition are truly resident-focused. The Committee provided insight and guidance on all aspects of planning and delivery, from deciding entry categories to designing flyers and the resident art catalogue. In 2024 the Engagement Team hosted the resident exhibition online, which gave residents across Victoria the opportunity to view the works of our talented residents.

Residents helping residents: shaping services at Common Ground

At Common Ground in South Australia, a resident with a background in social work and social planning wanted to give back to her community in a meaningful way. Her idea? Co-designing a resident feedback survey that explores the impact of existing activities and services—and helps shape what’s oered in the future. Drawing on her lived experience and professional expertise, she developed the survey from scratch, with the goal of capturing residents’ voices and ensuring their feedback directly informs service delivery. Her generosity of time and skill is helping Housing Choices refine and improve the experiences of those we house, from the ground up.

“Home is Where the Art is is a great and fun opportunity to showcase tenant artworks. I really enjoyed the last exhibition and working group, it was great to work with other artists, help organise the exhibition, design and consult about invitations, advertising and colour catalogue and visiting other galleries/venues. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking to the other artists. It's quite unique to have an exhibition with children’s art and adults’ art. Any tenant can enter this competition – a positive experience for anyone involved. I really do believe art is therapy.”

This is a powerful example of shared ownership and collaboration, where a resident becomes an active partner in creating more responsive, resident-centred services.
