INTRODUCTION KATE BENTLEY RI
Kate Bentley originally trained as a sculptor and Theatre Designer but by 1999 she had evolved into a full-time professional painter. She has subsequently enjoyed numerous solo shows throughout the UK and has clocked up many painting prizes. 2023 saw her win the Hosking House Trust Prize - 6th Annual Women’s Emerging Artist Painting Award and the Sea Pictures Gallery Award at the Royal Society of Marine Painters’ Annual Exhibition. She was also awarded membership to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (RI). Her location and landscape hugely influences her subject matter and historically Kate is a ‘painter of life,’ using her en- plein air sessions and life drawing to feed into her narrative paintings. The paintings are initiated in the studio from mark making, working over studies and old work and a huge amount of experimentation. A sense of incredible depth, colour and light is achieved by building up layers of paint and scraping or sanding it back, to reveal what is underneath and then beginning the process again. ‘Kimono Journeys’ weaves together Kate’s interest in traditional kimonos as works of art in their own right and her love of the human form. It is a truly breathtaking body of work that conveys the beauty and the drama of its subject matter along with Kate’s interest in pattern and texture.
