As Time Goes By

A YEAR LATER, WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED?

Things may have slowed down, or even stopped, in the past year, but time certainly isn’t one of them. It seems like just a month ago, we were hearing about this new disease that was infecting people in China and then here in the U.S. Then we went into lockdown, and the rest is history. But it wasn’t a month ago, of course — it’s been a year since the pandemic hit America. Time flies by at a relentless pace, and we have to keep up or learn to let it pass, no matter what’s going on in our personal lives. Or, for that matter, in the headlines. Personally, I’m not someone who wants time to stop. I embrace the challenges that come as things change; and, in many ways, Wolf Retirement Navigation is stronger than it was last year — and certainly more resilient and confident in our ability to weather a storm and still help our clients feel secure in their future retirement years. But then I turn around and see that this month, my daughter Isabella celebrates her 8th birthday, and suddenly I’m ready for time to stop. Just for that one moment of realization, I know that she’s headed for bigger and better things each year, things that will eventually take her away from us and out into the world. And then I remember that it’s not all bad. Right now, one of her favorite things is riding roller Investment Advisory Services offered through Retirement Wealth Advisors (RWA), a Registered Investment Advisor. well. I mentioned that we’re stronger than we were last year, and that strength is focused on tax-efficient portfolios and plans — a good thing to discuss this month, as everyone prepares to do their taxes. More than ever before, we’re planning with tax reduction in mind for our clients, both now and in the future. After all, saving money is one thing, but if it disappears into the government’s coffers, that nest egg doesn’t do as much good as it should. As a side note, I find it ironic that the government wants to tax retirees at all — the less money retired people have, the more likely they are to need government assistance. So, as we look back at the difference a year can make and forward into the future of our clients’ happy retirements, I’d like to keep that in mind. We can always learn more as time goes on, so please stay tuned for new ways to save and navigate your tax-efficient and stress-free retirement!

FELINE FRIENDS OR CANINE COMRADES How Pets Improve Our Health and Happiness

toll, but the sense of duty pet owners have around caring for their animals helps them avoid this. The daily tasks of feeding, playing with, and walking your animal can help provide structure and bring meaning to your life. They also give you something to look forward to each day. What’s better than waking up or coming home to a wagging tail or loud meow? This is how pets help improve their owners’ mental and physical health. Studies also show that those who care for pets have less stress and lower blood pressure and cholesterol than their petless counterparts. You’re also more likely to maintain a daily exercise routine. Humans have an innate need to be social, and without someone to talk to regularly, our mental well-being can start to deteriorate. Pets may not be the best conversation partners, but they may increase your social activity. Walking a dog

to a local park every day, for example, can provide an opportunity for you to interact with other people. If you live alone, this simple activity can increase your social circle and improve your mental health. Find the Right Pet Before taking advantage of the many benefits pets offer, it’s crucial to consider which pet is right for you. Doing research can help answer important questions about which animals might be a good fit for you and your lifestyle and which aren’t. Finding a perfect match may take some time, but once that connection is made, there is nothing that will bring more joy into both of your lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a list of questions that will help guide you to the perfect pet. Take a look at CDC.gov/healthypets .

As people grow older, they’re more likely to find themselves at home with less company. If your family members live far away or you have physical limitations that make it difficult to leave the house, you may be at an increased risk of experiencing loneliness. This is why adopting an animal can be so helpful. Pets offer comfort and love, and many encourage physical activity. Integrating a pet into your life as you grow older can be just what you need to lift your spirit and keep you healthy. The Benefits of Pet Ownership A lack of purpose can take a significant

Kiss That File Cabinet of Paperwork Goodbye 3 Ways to Spring-Clean Your Finances

Spring is finally here, and with it probably came the urge to organize your home and home office. If you’re already decluttering and cleaning, why not tackle your finances at the same time? Here are three tips to help you get started. 1. Weed out ancient documents. You probably have at least one box, file cabinet, or closet stuffed full of financial paperwork. If so, we have good news for you: A lot of it can go! As a rule of thumb, you can toss out monthly bills after you pay them (or after they’re credited to your bank statement) and throw away receipts that are NOT related to products under warranty, tax returns, or insurance claims. If you are unsure of which documents to keep and what the amount of time to hold on to them is, then give Andrea a call at the office so she can provide you with a document-retention cheat sheet.

You can also pitch bank and credit card statements, paid medical bills, investment statements, pay stubs, and receipts if they’re more than a year old. You should keep your tax records for the last seven years on hand, but if you really want to deep- clean, you can throw away older ones. 2. Invest in a shredder or use our shredding service. When we say you can “throw away” personal or financial documents, we really mean you should shred them. Better yet, we are happy to offer shredding services to you at both our Wolf Retirement Navigation offices, complimentary for clients and their friends. Just give Andrea a call to schedule your drop-off appointment. 3. Digitize what you can. Once you’ve winnowed your papers to the ones that are truly important, consider

digitizing the remaining records with a document scanner. Once you’ve scanned in all of your documents, make sure you store the files securely on your home computer and in a backup location. This can be a flash drive or external hard drive that you keep in a high, dry place in your home or a reputable cloud-based platform. Once your physical finances are decluttered, you can look ahead to your investments, retirement accounts, and financial future! To streamline that space and set yourself up for a stress- free summer, make an appointment to check in with your Wolf Retirement Navigation financial advisor.

Vacation Destinations That Will Pay You to Visit

In the wake of COVID-19, tourist destinations worldwide have been hit hard. To lure travelers back, some places are offering steep discounts and other incentives throughout all of 2021. With cheap airfare and great deals on accommodations, tours, food, and more, you can take a luxury vacation on a dime this year. Mexican Caribbean Few words evoke the image of beaches, sun, and saltwater like “Cancun” does. This Mexican locale has become synonymous with leisure, as have other destinations in the Caribbean — beautiful places like Isla Mujeres or the Riviera Maya. Tourists can visit all of them at a steep discounted rate until the end of 2021 thanks to promotions from the Hotel Association of Cancun and the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion’s council. Head to En.Come2MexicanCaribbean.com to find

vouchers for two free nights in a hotel for every two you pay for, steeply discounted airfare, and even options for free food and drinks. Thai Paradise Although it’s no longer the hidden destination it once was, there are still a lot of good reasons to visit Thailand. In addition to being an affordable place to travel, Thailand also has great food and an amazing climate. To make up for the financial hit due to suspended travel because of the virus, the Cape Fahn Hotel is offering incentives into 2021 including a complimentary upgrade to the next class of care, which gives economy spenders access to executive accommodations. Other incentives include free meals, round-trip airport service, and discounted beach picnics and boat tours.

Check out CapeFahnHotel.com/offers for more information. Whistler, British Columbia Although this destination in British Columbia might be known for its winter activities, there’s a lot to love about Whistler in late spring and early summer! One great thing? The amazing array of money-saving options you can find here. The Riverside Resort, for example, is offering mountain-view cabins at a 3-for-2 discount — pay for two nights and get a third for free! Traveling to Canada can be tricky at the moment, but if you use a good travel agent, you can take advantage of some great deals. Other incentives in the region include free meals (or a per diem meal rebate) as well as discounts on guided tours.
