A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

This week at Waldegrave the cold weather receded and students worked hard on their studies. We had the pleasure of inviting Alastair Campbell into school and the student parliament reps from each tutor group had the opportunity to meet him and ask him questions. As always Year 10 were incredibly thoughtful, asking really insightful questions and having the courage to talk about the issues that mattered most to them. We have been focusing on issues of social justice during our pastoral time this week. We had an assembly highlighting the key characters from the Post Office scandal and how they kept battling over many years for justice and compensation. We also touched upon Holocaust remembrance day and encouraged the students to think about what they might do given the opportunity to help others.

In tutor time we worked through resources on Empathy week and heard the stories of students who had been made homeless and battled through really tough times to go onto become great members of society.

Yesterday a group of 10 Science students had the opportunity to attend a Bioengineering taster day at Imperial College in White City. Students spent the day participating in a variety of workshops that included backbone biomechanics and designing a ventilator. They were able to hear from a number of professionals throughout the day. I hope these students had a lovely time exploring the world of bioengineering. The tutor group in the lead with epraise points this week is 10FJA. They are closely followed by 10PRE and 10EAH. The top three epraise scoring students this week are Lacey in 10PRE, Alice in 10FJA and Sophia in 10SHO.

Next week we say goodbye to January. Students should be getting on top of their work experience plans (see tutor group google classroom) and students interested in the Silver DofE should have also signed up.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Looking for Alaska by John Green

“Looking for Alaska’’ by John Green is a poignant exploration of adolescence, love, and loss. The novel follows the journey of Miles Halter as he navigated the labyrinth of boarding school life and falls for the enigmatic Alaska Young. With a perfect blend of humour and heartbreak, Green crafts a narrative that resonates with readers long after the last page. “Looking for Alaska’’ is a beautifully written coming-of-age story that captures the essence of the human experience in a way that is both relatable and profound.
