Neurons

The neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system. The have the property of electrical excitability and propagate these impulses from one point to another. The neuron must have 3 parts: body, dendrites & axon.

The nerve cell body also called the soma, contains the cell nucleus, cytoplasm and cell organelles.

Branched processes, dendrites, receive information and carry that information towards the nerve cell body. The axon is long, cylindrical process which originates from the axon hillock of the cell body. It is responsible for propagation of nerve impulses. Axons contain mitochondria, microtubules & neurofibrils. The cell membrane of the axon is called the axolemma and the cytoplasm is called the axoplasm . Terminal branching of the axon constitute the telodendritic zone which ends in terminal end bulbs (synaptic end bulbs) at the synapse. A synapse is the communication between neurons and/or neurons and an effector cell.
