Equine Physiology Workbook

The spinal cord looks different at different levels of the cord; we see this as varying proportions of grey to white matter as nerve fibres enter and exit the spinal cord.

Prominent depression on the surface of the cord include:

1. Dorsomedian sulcus (median groove)

2. Ventromedian fissure (median fissure)

SPINAL MENINGES

The spinal cord is also wrapped in 3 layers of meninges. The layers that cover the brain continue caudally to surround the spinal cord. The change from cranial to spinal occurs at the level of foramen magnum. 1. Endosteum of vertebral canal 2. Epidural Space– filled with adipose tissue & blood vessels (not present in cranium because the endosteum and dura mater are fused. 3. Dura mater

4. Subdural space 5. Arachnoid mater

6. Arachnoid trabeculae 7. Subarachnoid space 8. Pia mater – adheres to spinal cord contains blood vessels to supply spinal cord 9. Spinal cord
