Special modifications:
1. Dentate Ligament– spinal cord is suspended in its dural envelope by lateral extensions of pia mater. These series of attachments occur between pairs of spinal nerves. It serves as an attachment and shock absorber. 2. Spinal Nerves pass through intervertebral foramen still invested in all 3 layers, but once they are through the foramen, the pia and arachnoid abruptly end but the dura mater continues to blend in with the epineurium of the nerve.
3. Filum Terminate- fibrous strands of pia mater attaching the spinal cord to the caudal vertebrae, acting as an anchor.
4. Lumbar Cistern- an enlargement of the subarachnoid space between the conus medullaris and inferior end of subarachnoid space and dura mater.
