Synergistic versus Antagonistic Effects

Synergistic Effect : when the effect of two or more hormones acting together is greater or more extensive than the effect of each individual hormone acting alone.

Antagonistic Effect : when one hormone opposes the effects of another hormone

Control of Hormone Secretion

Regulation of hormone secretion normally prevents overproduction or underproduction of any hormone. Hormone secretion is regulated by:

 Signals from the nervous system  Chemical changes in the blood  Other hormones  Circadian rhythms/sleep/light

Most hormonal regulation works via Negative Feedback, but a few operate on Positive Feedback.
