Glomerular Filtration

Glomerular Filtrate : The fluid that enters the glomerular capsule.

On average, the daily volume of glomerular filtrate in equines is 1200-1500 litres. More than 99% of the glomerular filtrate returns to the bloodstream via tubular reabsorption. Therefore, only 5- 15 litres are excreted as the urine.

The Filtration Membrane

The glomerular capsule is a ā€˜C’ shaped double membrane that consists of visceral and parietal layers . The visceral layer consists of epithelial cells called Podocytes . The parietal layer of the glomerular capsule consists of epithelium and forms the outer wall of the capsule. The endothelial cells of the glomerular capillaries and the podocytes from the capsule form a leaky barrier known as the Filtration Membrane . This permits filtration of water and small solutes but prevents filtration of most plasma proteins, blood cells and platelets.
