Equine Physiology Workbook

2. Formation of Acetyl Coenzyme A (CoA): this is a transition step that prepares pyruvic acid for entrance into the Krebs Cycle. This step also produces another NADH + H+.

2 (pyruvic acid + coenzyme A  acetyl – CoA + NADH +H)

3. Krebs Cycle (aka Citric Acid Cycle) : this cycle oxidizes Acetyl Coenzyme A and produces ATP, NADH + H+, and FADH 2 .

Occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria and consists of a series of oxidation-reduction reactions.

2 (Acetyl CoA  3 NADH + H +1 FADH 2 + 1 ATP)
