CHAPTER 3: TISSUES
Tissue: a group of similar cells that have a common origin and function
Body tissues can be classified into 4 basic types according to structure and function:
1. Epithelial Tissue:
Covers body surfaces and lines hollow organs, body cavities, tracts and ducts. It also forms glands.
2. Connective Tissue:
Protects and supports the body and its organs. It can bind organs together, store energy reserves such as fat and help provide immunity.
3. Muscular Tissue:
Generates the physical force needed to make body structures move and generate body heat.
4. Nervous Tissue:
Detects changes in a variety of conditions inside and outside the body and responds by generating action potentials and activate muscular contractions and glandular secretions.
