Equine Physiology Workbook

combination of both collagen and elastic fibres give the reticular region: strength, extensibility (ability to stretch) and elasticity (ability to return to original state). Skin extensibility is seen in pregnant mares, obesity, and around joints. Over stretching of this may cause small tears in the dermis causing Striae (stretch marks). In horses, a third layer is present over the lateral neck, dorsal back, thorax & croup. It is deep to the reticular layer and contains fine collagen, elastin & reticular fibres. Smooth muscle fibres are noted with in the dermis of the teats, scrotum & penis.
