Chestnuts & Ergots are both believed to be vestiges (evolutionary remnants). They are both horny outgrowths of the epidermis. Chestnuts can serve as identification markers for horses (like fingerprints). Each is individual in shape and texture.
Wound Healing
There are two processes by which the skin is able to heal from damage. The specific process used depends on the depth of damage incurred. A. Epidermal wound healing: slight damage to the epidermis and may extend into the superficial dermis; no loss of structure or function occurs Ex. Minor cuts, abrasions, burns i. Detachment: basal cells of the epidermis surrounding the wound break contact with the basement membrane ii. Migration: cells enlarge and migrate across the wound as a sheet until advancing cells from the opposite side of the wound meet. As the basal cells migrate a hormone called Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) to increase rates of cell division to replace the ones that have moved into the wound. The relocated basal cells divide to build new strata, thus thickening the new epidermis.
