Transforming Vision Care for Georgians in Need
Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, Inc. We are excited to share with you highlights from our past fiscal year FY 2023 (July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023), including demographics and finances with our continued focus on the future vision needs of Georgians.
Served Over 18,757 Patients!! It is unacceptable that any Georgian is unable to access vision care. Yet today, there are 1.4 million Georgians who lack health care coverage. Research by Emory Eye Center also identified 52 counties in Georgia where there are few, if any, vision care providers. That’s why from July 2022 – June 2023 Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, in partnership with Georgia Lions, SERVED OVER 18,757 PATIENTS.

Our surgical coordination services allow Georgians, who do not have insurance or the means to pay for surgeries such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, to receive the care they need at no charge. This year we served 133 patients through 329 procedures, providing $63,350 in charitable care, and received $442,578 in in-kind ophthalmology, anesthesia, and surgical centers/hospital care. We continue to offer frame kits to Georgia optometrists, ophthalmologists and Lions Clubs for patients who cannot afford to pay for their glasses. We provided eyeglasses to 592 Georgians through the frame kit program. In January 2023, I led a group consisting of board members, staff, community partners and donors in a strategic planning session to guide us over the next three years. We started with a vision of where we want to be in ten years. Our goals include satellite offices, additional lanes of tele-optometry and traditional equipment, revamping the Chamblee clinic with new equipment, and essentially, becoming the premiere vision care non-profit in the state of Georgia. As we approach our 75th anniversary, we look forward to engaging our community partners and neighbors, Lions Clubs, donors and volunteers in our celebration.
Well before the completion of the one-year pilot project, we knew that tele-optometry had made a huge impact on Georgians who had little to no access to vision services. Partnering with Federally Qualified Health Centers and Public Health Nursing Agencies to bring high quality, high-tech care is a game changer. In the southeastern United States, access to vision providers, especially in rural areas depicts the vision desert for Georgians in desperate need of care. In the first year, we served 29 counties and 1,054 patients. We know that we can and will do more in the future and are raising funds to provide a second lane of tele-optometry equipment and staffing. Our collaborative work with the Lions Clubs and the Federally Qualified Health Centers was also recognized in The Advance newspaper regarding the Lions Club of Lyons and the Lyons Mercy Clinic in February 2023 and in other news outlets in the various counties we serve. For the collaborative work that we do through partner agencies, we received the Healthcare Heroes Award for Community Outreach in the May 26th-June 1, 2023, edition of the Atlanta Business Chronicle . Our traditional mobile and on-site Chamblee Clinics also received a boost this year as we developed contracts with new optometrists. We are very excited to be able to provide traditional mobile clinics for various populations, such as shelters, refugee services, and on-site school clinics and to have doctors available for our Chamblee Clinic. We served 480 patients through our traditional mobile clinics and 2,614 patients through our Chamblee Clinic. Exams performed represented $319,500 in in-kind services at a value of $250 per exam.

Vision for the Future
Tele-Optometry is Making High-Quality Vision Care Accessible to More Georgians
The Need for Accessible Indigent Vision Care According to our partners at Emory University, by 2050, there will be a 220% increase in vision impairment in those aged 40 years and over in the state of Georgia - reflecting a 140% increase higher than the U.S. national average of vision impairment. This primarily reflects differences in age and race demographics in our state. Indigent Care – Tele-Optometry Second Lane Expansion Budget The program is projected to cost $375,000. Below is detail related to the costs associated with the program.
Providing better access to affordable vision care was the driving factor behind our decision to pilot the first- ever statewide exam program in April 2022. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation has created a scalable delivery model that allows uninsured and underinsured Georgian access and continuity of vision care. Currently we are working with Federally Qualified Health Center and other clinic partners that can now provide a complimentary service to their existing health care practice.
This is wonderful! I never thought I would get to have my eyes checked. It felt like the doctor was in the room with me. Thank you! GLLF tele-optometry patient
During our first year, we had successfully executed 76 tele-optometry clinics working through 32 partners serving 1,054 patients in 29 counties.
This quote expresses the sentiment of patients living in one of 52 Georgia counties that have had no access to professional vision care and are now experiencing high-quality vision care through our tele-optometry service.

How it Works: Patient experiencing vision care delivered via tele-optometry at a partner FQHC
Our success, with tele-optometry, from the past year provides us with a strong impetus to serve more Georgians in need, including obtaining a second lane for tele-optometry services. As we continue to access our state and see the number of counties where “vision care deserts” still exist, it is apparent, we need to fund and create a second tele-optometry team if we are to close the accessibility gap. We feel that two teams making 150-175 annual visits each with a frequency of 4 to 6 times a year depending on patient demand, will move us much closer to our vision of accessible and affordable vision care for all Georgians.

Transforming Comprehensive Vision Care for Children
Transforming Comprehensive Vision Care for Children continued....
Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation is grateful for the partnership between Kia, Atlanta Public Schools, YMCA, Lions Clubs of Georgia, Lions Clubs International Foundation and the Peach Bowl. At the 2022 Evening in the End Zone, Kia announced that they were generously funding an initiative for Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation to provide eye screenings, eye exams and glasses for students in select Title 1 Atlanta Public Schools and participating YMCA summer camps.
During the school year, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation staff, along with Georgia Lions Club volunteers and volunteer licensed optometrists, performed vision screenings and exams at select Title 1 Elementary Schools. If at any time, volunteer optometrists were not available, we provided the students in need of vision exams with VSP vouchers, secured through the Lions Club International Foundation and a list of doctors in their area who participate in this initiative. In the same way, during the summer, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation staff, along with Georgia Lions Club volunteers performed vision screenings at participating YMCA summer camps. Youth in need of a vision exam received VSP vouchers and a list of doctors in their area who participate in this initiative. All eligible students in this initiative who needed glasses received them free of any charge, thanks to Kia. •

Collaborating with District 18-I Lions and Lions Club International Foundation to Better Serve Local Patients
Dedicated Volunteers and Donated Eyewear Enable Life Changing Missions Abroad continued....
Collaborating with District 18-I Lions in the coming months, we will be investing approximately $100,000 to upgrade the optical equipment at the Chamblee Vision Clinic which currently uses vision equipment installed when the clinic opened in 2010. This “latest technology” equipment will enhance the patient experience and attract more partner optometrists and ophthalmologists to serve at the clinic. Thanks to the generous efforts of the Lions of District 18-I and matching grants provided by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) we will obtain new equipment for the Chamblee clinic the beginning of 2024. In late April 2023, this initiative began. Given the location of the clinic and the patients it serves, GLLF approached the District 18-I District Governor, Steve Helwig, for his guidance and support. He quickly mobilized his Cabinet to approve this effort utilizing available District Impact Grant funds as part of the required local funding. Within District 18-I, Lion Eric Lu and the Chinese American Lions Club Association (CALCA) also made a very generous contribution that when combined with the District’s contribution generated $50,000 of Lions’ investment in this project eligible for a matching grant through LCIF. This matching grant program helps “provide capital funding

Spotlight on June 2022 Mission Trip In June 2022, Dave Crumley of Bogart, GA working with the Faith Presbyterian Church traveled to Nicaragua to assist local churches in providing medical care to their congregations. Each church (three in total) conducted one-day medical clinics, and using recycled prescription eyewear donated by GLLF, were able to provide over 200 people with life changing vision correction. There was a 12-year-old boy named Gabriel (pictured above, second from the right) who has had sight issues for all of his life. Dave’s mission team provided him with the best glasses they had on hand, but determined he had issues with his eyes that needed additional care. •
The Center operates entirely on the efforts of volunteers. While Lions from around the state collect donations for the Recycling Center, a few local Lions Clubs along with support from community businesses and civic groups process the collected glasses. •

HIGHLIGHTS
During FY23, we continued to take bigger “Strides” to hosting mission-centric fundraising events that brought our communities together and enabled the creation of more teams using peer-to-peer fundraising. We are so appreciative for the efforts of the 32 Fundraising Teams that made an impact on our mission through their fundraising, donations and registrations. In particular, we want to thank 22 participating Georgia Lions Clubs’ Strides teams who raised cumulatively over $24K, representing almost 50% of the total raised. This includes three Lions Clubs – Lyons, Camilla and Lawrenceville – who each held walks in their respective communities that generated over $1,000 each of support for Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation! •
