Leadership of a broad portfolio of operational estates and campus services functions. Ensuring, as the senior responsible person, that the estate portfolio is compliant to legislative and quality standards. Identifying external funding opportunities to help realise the greater ambitions for investment. Working with external development partners from the public and private sectors to achieve desired ambitions. Setting and monitoring the professional standards required of Estates staff, having regard to quality expectations as well as relevant statutory and regulatory requirements. Acting as the prime point of contact for senior academic and professional services staff to provide professional guidance on estates or related issues concerning services provided by the Division. Person Specification Experience and track record in a senior estates leadership role with experience of initiating, developing and delivering estates strategies to support an organisation’s institutional strategy.

The Director of Estates takes strategic leadership responsibility for the development and management of the University’s Physical Environment.

The Director of Estates is a senior and influential management post at the University of Derby who will make a significant contribution to the development and delivery of the University’s wider strategic aims and objectives and its operation policies. They are expected to play a key leadership role within the University’s professional services team.

Main Responsibilities

Taking senior management responsibility for high quality service provision across a range of areas including masterplanning, capital development planning and delivery, space management, property and asset management, infrastructure and estates maintenance, facilities management, campus services, grounds maintenance and energy management. Creating and maintaining an estates strategy in line with the overall corporate objectives of the University. Leadership of estates strategy development and estate masterplanning. Taking overarching responsibility for the Estates division budget, allocating the resources to the various areas in line with the strategic priorities of the University. Overseeing the strategic direction of circa 250 in-house staff and direct line management of the Estates Senior Management team, including the Head of Property Development, the Head of Campus Services and the Head of Maintenance Services. Ensuring that the Estates services are supported by external suppliers and providers whilst ensuring best value from the market. Ensuring that the appropriate supply chain management techniques and process are applied.

Experience and ability to motivate and lead a large scale and diverse internal and external teams on behalf of a large, complex organisation.

Experience of masterplanning across a multi-building, multi-site environment.

Track record of leading large scale, complex capital programmes consisting of both refurbishment and new build development projects or programmes. Experience of planning and managing large scale capital budgets. Track record of leading the provision of operational estates and facilities management services such as estates maintenance and compliance, grounds management and associated operational budgets of significant scale. Experience of representing an organisation with external stakeholders/partners on development schemes and an understanding of the commercial property and development market.

Claude Littner Lecture

Strategic leadership and oversight of the planning and delivery of the University’s capital programme.

Considerable experience and skill in negotiation of complex contracts and agreements.

High level communication written and oral communication skills.

Ability to communicate vision to a broad range of stakeholders.

Possessing the emotional intelligence to operate successfully in a leading HEI.

Possessing a relevant professional background in the estates/property/facilities industry, with qualification and/or professional membership in a relevant subject (e.g. planning, architecture, construction, surveying, engineering, facilities management).
