T he figure of t he Shepherd and sheep is old a nd familiar to t he J e ws a nd is full of helpful suggestions. T he P h a r i s e es were self-appointed shepherds. T h e re w as no sanction in t he law for their position. T h ey gained and m a i n t a i n ed their place by evil practices, as a thief by subtlety or / as a robber by force. A wall surrounded t he sheep-fold and it had b ut one door. A por- ter w a s on duty, t he shepherd led t he flock through this door a t night for safety. T he door w as the only legitimate e n t r a n c e; thieves and robbers climbed up other ways. T h e c o n t r a st is between the t r ue a nd false s h e p h e r d s; between Christ and t he P h a r - isees. (2) T he Gate of t he Sheep-fold. 2-10. T he parable is followed by a clear-cut s t a t e- ment. "I am t he door of t he sheep." The w ay into t he sheep-fold (kingdom) is by Me.
