Size didn’t matter for the winner of this category, with judges recognising this small company’s real passion for delivering excellence. The project comprised a complete renovation and deep retrofit to vastly improve and upgrade the building’s energy systems. To enhance its energy performance, the old inefficient non-condensing oil-fired boiler was replaced with an air-to-water heat pump. The firm also performed SR50 roomby- room heat loss calculations to optimise pump efficiency and performance. The installation included underfloor heating, aluminium radiators and a pressurised hot and cold water system. The panel felt Michael & Simon demonstrated a great grasp of its work and the goals of the project.

A very different project executing a full mechanical upgrade to a building from the 1850s saw AL Mechanical Services recognised as highly commended in Domestic Project of the Year. Presenting its own distinct issues, the Redwood project required careful planning of routes to retain all existing coving and lime mortar ceilings. As well as upgrading the existing building, works included provision of new services to an extension comprising underfloor heating, designer radiators, a ventilation system, boosted hot- and cold-water services and an outdoor swimming pool heated by a heat pump. Judges were impressed by AL Mechanical’s coordination with the building contractor to deliver the project on time and within budget.

The works included a full mechanical upgrade to the 1850s existing building and new services to the extension.
