R epurposing an underutilised wing of Down Hall Country House Hotel to create a new sauna, spa and gym area presented a few challenges for the project’s plumbing and heating engineer. An historic property in rural Hertfordshire, the Tudor-style hotel has been extended and renovated over many centuries. It has variously served as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers during WWI, a girls’ school in the 1930s and an antiques business and conference centre in the 1960s, becoming a country house hotel in the 1980s. Down Hall is currently owned by the Veladail Group and operated by Then Hospitality, which commissioned the project adding a new sauna, spa and gym area with shower room and disabled toilet facility in the west wing of the property. With the area to be repurposed located underground, waste discharge through existing drains was not an option, and the project architect recommended installation of a Saniflo macerator pump. However, proposed visibility of the unit in the washroom area was an issue for the owner, requiring creative input from Plumbing and Heating Engineer Brian
specialist Saniflo, Brian settled on a Sanicubic from the Professional Range as the right solution. He said: “The sauna and spa area is next door to a storage room, so it made sense to tuck the macerator out of the way and connect it up through the walls. That way, the public would not catch sight of it. “The sauna and spa is an important addition to the hotel, and it is imperative that the area can offer continuity of service to guests. “I installed the Sanicubic because it has two pumps; if one goes down for whatever reason, then the other will automatically kick in. The unit also has a shut-off valve fitted so it can be isolated if there’s a problem, which is a real plus for me as a plumber.” The Sanicubic is located in the floor space with 50mm discharge pipes neatly fixed to the walls joining the main drainage pipes in the ceiling. A large access hatch enables ease of servicing. “This job wouldn’t have been possible without the Saniflo unit,” said Brian. “The technology has enabled the hotel to

install a whole new leisure area. “The advice from Saniflo has also really made a difference too. Simple tips such as using the descaler and advising customers what not to put down the unit might seem obvious, but are helpful.” T: +353 (0)46 973 3077 E: robin.jackman@sanirish.com www.saniflo.ie
