TARPON TALES: Casting Lines With Co-Counsel Tarpon season in Georgetown provides a unique opportunity for us to say thank you to the lawyers with whom we share a co-counsel relationship. Tarpon is a large migratory fish that enters the warm waters of Georgetown’s Winyah Bay in the summer months – generally between June and September to spawn. Due to its regal appearance of size and color, the tarpon is nicknamed the “Silver King.” While the average size of a tarpon is 40–60 pounds, a mature tarpon can grow to 150 pounds! In South Carolina, the tarpon is a catch-and-release-only species, and while their population has grown in South Carolina, they are very challenging to fish to locate and even more difficult to hook and catch. It is these qualities that make a tarpon one of the most sought-after “big game” species to fish in the world. Co-counsel relationships, as approved by the South Carolina Bar Association, often provide a distinct advantage for clients who are injured due to the negligence of someone else. Rather than paying the hourly rate for a lawyer, most people who are injured throughout the United States hire lawyers on a “contingency” basis rather than an hourly basis. This means that instead of being billed every month for the per-hour services of a lawyer, the client agrees to pay the lawyer a percentage of the recovery if and only if the case results in a settlement or a verdict in favor of the client. If the case does not result in a settlement or verdict in favor of the client, the client does not owe the attorney any fee. This model has been used throughout the U.S. for decades and prevents the client from having to part with tens of thousands of dollars in retainer fees at the onset of a case. When a client consents to a co-counsel or referral relationship, the South Carolina bar permits lawyers to team up with their colleagues in other firms to work on cases together. The lawyers agree to split the contingency fee amongst themselves, with no additional fee to the client. In this instance, the client essentially gets two (or sometimes

Succeed in Your No-Spend Challenge FINANCIAL DETOX

Thanks to clever advertising and a lack of discipline in spending habits, many people spend too much on trinkets and other things they don’t need. To help us all stop impulsive spending habits, the No-Spend Challenge was developed and has gone viral on the internet. This financial detox challenge encourages us to break free from the mindless spending we may be partaking in. It’s a challenge that pushes mindfulness to reassess financial habits rather than deprive us of necessities. The first step is creating clear budgeting goals. Whether paying off debt, building an emergency fund, or saving for a specific milestone, having a concrete and well-defined objective helps you stay motivated throughout the process. This should also include an end date to

achieve your goal — a year, month, or week are all options. Your plan should also identify and anticipate potential roadblocks during the no-spend period. This structure will make the challenge feel like more than just a temporary spending freeze. This accountability and the communal nature of the trend encourage you to reflect on how often you’re spending your hard-earned money. You can also rediscover the value of experiences that don’t cost anything and develop healthier financial habits. These help dismantle a consumer mindset, enabling you to use funds to fulfill goals rather than a quick adrenaline hit. When you complete the challenge, you will emerge armed with newfound

financial freedom, awareness, and discipline, and you’ll be more inclined to reach short-term financial goals, practice healthy spending habits, and work toward long-term financial health. A No-Spend Challenge can foster a community of others who gain these new skills and inspire others to halt their own consumption. This intentional approach to spending will assure participants that they’re in control of their aspirations and the finances that can fund them.

A Unanimous Verdict Mother’s Day Deserves Celebrating holiday began in medieval England. On the fourth Sunday in Lent, those who had moved far from home would return to enjoy fruitcakes with family and attend a church service closest to their childhood home, which they nicknamed the “mother church.” Gradually, the holiday became less focused on religion and more on showing appreciation for mothers across the country. That Sunday would earn the name Mothering Sunday, when, much like today, children would bring their moms flowers to demonstrate their love and appreciation. How Other Cultures Celebrate Each year, Mother’s Day festivities occur around the globe, though how people choose to commemorate it differs greatly. For example, in Italy, it’s customary for kids to help with chores and cooking meals, allowing their mom to relax and enjoy her well-earned respite. Farther south in Africa, the Ethiopians celebrate Mother’s Day for three full days, feasting, dancing, and commemorating the women who brought them into the world. Here in America, we write messages of heartfelt gratitude in Mother’s Day cards and pass them along to the women who raised us, along with flowers that reflect the grace and beauty they have brought to our lives. Mother’s Day is a time when people the world over can come together and celebrate the tireless work and dedication of moms everywhere.

Although Mother’s Day started in the United States, it is not strictly an American holiday. It is celebrated throughout the world — and for good reason! The bond between children and their parents is something special, something anyone with kids would attest to. Mothers always deserve cards and flowers, but on one day every year, they get the special recognition they have rightfully earned through their selfless parenting and shining maternal examples. Here is how Mother’s Day started, and people around the globe continue to celebrate it. The History of Mother’s Day Formal celebrations of motherhood can be traced as far back as ancient Rome and Greece, but the tradition closest in nature to our modern

For over 30 years, the water at Camp Lejeune, a U.S. Marine Corps base near Jacksonville, North Carolina, was contaminated by volatile compounds. According to government sources, as many as one million service members and civilians may have been exposed between 1953 and 1987, when the worst-affected wells were finally closed down. In 2022, the Senate passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act, or CLJA, enabling victims and their families to seek legal compensation for the pain and hardship they endured as a result of imbibing and being exposed to toxic contaminants. Here at Evans Moore, we are honored and dedicated to advocating on behalf of all service members and civilians impacted by Camp Lejeune’s sanitary conditions. If you or someone you know suffered an injury or illness as a result of the toxic chemicals in Camp Lejeune’s drinking water, please reach out to us so we can help you receive the justice you deserve.

Celebrating Armed Forces Day At Evans Moore, we have had the good fortune to represent several members of the armed services in the last eight years. Evans Moore attorney, James “Jimmy” Moore Jr., served as an officer in the United States Air Force during Vietnam following his graduation from The Citadel. His father, James Bernice “Boo Daddy” Moore Sr., was called to active duty as a lieutenant in November of 1943, serving in the European Theater of WWII and was discharged with the rank of Captain. Scott’s grandfather was a Naval Lieutenant in WWII, and his dad spent 12 years as a captain in the United States Air Force, flying KC-135 mid-air refuelers and C5 transport planes in and out of Vietnam. Scott’s two older siblings were both born on Air Force bases. We are proud to have been guided by veterans’ examples of valor, bravery, hard work, and service to others. May 18 is Armed Forces Day, where we can share our appreciation for the patriots who answer our nation’s call and take an oath to defend our country and its Constitution. Despite its significance, this holiday often does not get its due. We would like to share Armed Forces Day’s history and what it represents. History of Armed Forces Day President Harry Truman spearheaded the effort to establish a holiday dedicated to thanking military members for their patriotism and selfless service to our country. As a result, Armed Forces Day was officially created on Aug. 31, 1949, to be celebrated on the third Saturday in May. Prior to 1949, there were separate days commemorating the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This meant the Marine Corps previously did not get their due, as they were denied their own dedicated day despite their protestations. Armed Forces Day replaced the three separate commemorations, creating a grander, unified celebration that honored the Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserve Forces, and the newly-created Space Force. What It Represents Armed Forces Day provides an opportunity to come together as a country in support of members of our military supporting our country. We remember the sacrifice of those protecting us at home, those serving overseas, and those who previously served and now act as examples of commitment to the service of others. More than solely echoing the sacrifices and service of our military members, this day also celebrates the spirit of teamwork and cooperation between the branches of our Armed Forces. They work together to protect our freedom and democracy, shielding current and future generations from those who would do us harm. Their example inspires us to do our part in our own profession and to obtain justice for those we serve. UNITY IN SERVICE
