WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF A ROOF LANTERN?

Maximising the amount of natural light in your home not only has a positive impact on energy usage and finances, as fewer artificial lights are needed, it also has a huge effect on your health and wellbeing.

Sunlight can play a great role in lifting our spirits and making us feel happier. It also helps to keep our ‘circadian rhythms’ in check, which are vital to regulate healthy sleep patterns. Like all other animals that are active during the day, us humans are naturally tuned in with the changes in light outside. Sensors in our eyes can detect the difference between morning sunlight and afternoon sunlight, which in turn influences the levels of our melatonin and serotonin hormones that work together to control our inner body clock.

Also, natural sunlight helps improve your body’s immune system and is a fantastic source of Vitamin D, which is vital for maintaining a healthy metabolism, bones and muscles. The space and layout of the room in your home can also have a huge effect on your health and wellbeing. Even a home’s ceiling height can have an influence; studies show that when people are in a building with higher ceilings, they are better at creative thinking and are more engaged at social gatherings.

SQUARE

SQUARE

Often sitting central in the middle of the ceiling, a square roof lantern has a neat, symmetrical and modern appearance.

A square lantern is a great option for homeowners who might be looking for something a little different from the usual rectangular shape. Best suited for smaller or square shaped ceilings, square roof lanterns draw natural light down into a singular zone of the room below, such as a seating area or a dining space.

Square roof lanterns also work well fitted above staircases, bathrooms or hallways. Smaller square roof lanterns can be ideal if you want them to subtly contribute to a room, rather than fitting a larger and more dominating rectangular one.

LOUNGE/LIVING ROOM

If fitness is a real priority for you then the freedom of a home gym is invaluable and an investment well worth making. For this simple yet spacious home gym, it was important to encourage as much natural light into the room as possible, to reduce the need for artificial lighting during workouts.

The humble bathroom is such an integral part of our homes, it’s a place you can escape to for a moment of peace. In bathrooms, combining functionality with aesthetics is highly effective, with plenty of natural light streaming into the room in a way that doesn’t compromise on privacy.

A roof lantern in an open plan kitchen/ diner makes all the difference in terms of achieving that special ‘wow’ factor. Designed to complement the style and architecture of the new extension, this roof lantern adds a sense of grandeur to the room. Correct proportions and positioning are essential.

Allowing more constant light into the room from above is the perfect way to brighten up any lounge or living room. The addition of a roof lantern, combined with fully opening bi-fold doors, provides the perfect relationship between inside and out, in a wonderfully light atmosphere.

FINIALS

Our decorative finials are made from timber- resin composite, which means they will last for decades to come. We use a timber-resin composite as opposed to solid timber which, from our experience, may split over time and could cause ingress of water. Choose from two finial shape options - ball or disc.

We use a premium grade knot-free laminated Redwood timber, selected for its durability and stability. Our timber is sourced from fast- growing, FSC ® certified forests and is a sustainable alternative to both tropical hardwoods and PVC. Thermal qualities of the timber aid heat retention in colder months.

Externally our timber roof lanterns are fully capped with marine grade, powder coated aluminium. Our aluminium capping provides exceptional durability and protection against weather conditions. No timber elements are exposed to the atmosphere, ensuring no water ingress or leaks.

Ventilation can be provided from a top- hung sash, operated electronically with auto controls. Most sizes of rectangular Aliwood lanterns can incorporate opening vents which will draw warm air up and out. Choose from a single vent or double vent depending on your preference.

The paint that coats the inside of our lanterns is of vital importance to provide a flawless, long-lasting finish. Internally our lanterns are spray- applied with Teknos paint (fully finished). This is approximately four times thicker and more effective than a brush-painted layer.

insulating, toughened glass units with Soft Low-E coating, argon gas filled cavity and warm edge spacer bar. SunGuard ® solar control glass can be added, which reflects the sun’s heat away from the glass, helping to prevent your home from overheating.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

In the world of modern construction, timber is the best renewable material available, making it the perfect resource for building sustainable roof lanterns.

Sustainability is at the forefront of our company ethos. We continuously strive to lower our carbon footprint and minimise our impact on the environment. We deliver sustainable products manufactured using environmentally friendly, renewable resources and recyclable materials. We have reduced the transportation of our timber, sourcing our wood from Europe rather than Africa. Where possible, all other building materials are also sourced from local suppliers,

cutting down on transport emissions and lowering our carbon footprint.

We invest in the latest machine technology to optimise the cutting of our timbers. Using a biomass boiler system we can convert the waste we do create into sustainable heating for our factory and offices. We have worked hard to increase the energy efficiency of products, which are themselves environmentally friendly, based on their quality and longevity.

Our timber is sourced from fast-growing, FSC ® certified forests.
