yourself since you came here and learned all about Chinamen.” Dr. J. J. Weitbrecht of the Church Missionary Society reported that a Brahmin said to a missionary after reading the first chapter of Romans that this chapter must have been put into the Scriptures after the arrival of the missionaries in India. William Ward, one of William Carey’s companions in India, read the first chapter of Romans with a pundit, or learned man of India, who declared that the Apostle Paul here exactly described the Hindus. Dr. Jacob Chamberlain reported to the American Bible Society that on a certain occasion he went into a city near Madras, India, where the name of Jesus had never been heard. He re quested his native assistant to read the first chapter of Romans to the audi ence which had assembled in the street. After the reading of this por tion of Scripture, a Brahmin stepped forward and said, “ Sir, that chapter must have been written for us Hindus. It describes us exactly.” The tract continues: “The Scrip tures are true. The account of the moral condition of the heathen given by the Apostle Paul in the opening of his Epistle to the Romans is literal ly correct. It is in no respect or degree overdrawn. It tells us what men left to themselves and unvisited by light from on high must come to. Only that which is bom of the Spirit is spirit; that which is bom of the flesh is and must be flesh.”

Some have said that the first chapter of Romans is exaggerated and that the catalog of sins enumerated there is not typical. An old tract found in a secondhand book gives the answers by quoting the remarks of the heathen themselves when they have heard for the first time the first chapter of Romans. These events took place somewhat over a century ago, but, as the tract says, “ Culture is no substitute for grace,” and, “ Human nature is the same in all ages.” A returned missionary reported to Dr. Worcester, secretary of the Amer ican Board of Missions, that after he had read the first chapter of Romans to a heathen congregation, they came around him at the close of the service and said, “ You wrote that chapter for us.” Dr. Wade, Missionary to Burma, once read the first chapter of Romans to a group of Burmese and when he had finished, one of them said, “You wrote that for us.” Dr. Dean, Missionary to China, had been conversing with an intelligent Chinese gentleman about the Bible and assured him that it was very old. Later this Chinese man came back to him with a look of accusation on his face and, pointing to the first chap ter of Romans, he exclaimed, “You told me your book was very ancient, but that chapter you have written
