RUSSELL l The first person to file nomina- tion papers for a Russell Township coun- cilor’s seat recently moved here, but the former Canadian Forces member consid- ers that an advantage. “Being new to the area I have fresh eyes,” said William Gordon Brown. “We love this area and I see things that could be im- proved upon.” Brown looks like the competitive body- builder he used to be. He recently retired from the Forces, where he was a technician authorized for weapons systems, and now works for Canada Post. He has managed $1 billion budgets, led people in very difficult situations around the country, says he is a confident leader, and also taken the Maxi- mo and green procurement courses. He is bilingual and used to working within formalities and constitutions. He was elect- ed Fleet Master Seaman before he retired from the Forces, and was also entertain- ment chair. “I know how to have fun too.” The Russell village resident is originally from a small community in Newfoundland and is married with one grown child. When asked how he’d balance work with council duties he said, “I’m used to long hours, multitasking, and managing differ- ent priorities of equal value.” He intends to update himself on township issues this summer. When asked why he is running he said, “I always wanted to get into politics.” He sees the councilor’s chair as an opportunity, in- tends someday to run for mayor, and may eventually go into provincial or federal poli- tics. Local issues he has noticed include taxes. “We should not let property taxes get out- rageous.” As someone who managed assets he says, “I’m used to getting by with a lim- ited budget.” He is also big on safety.“I’mworried about the high snowbanks. I’d like to devote more time and effort to reducing snowbanks on properties.” He says his first water bill shocked him. “There’s a lot of debt repayment, but when that debt occurred financing rates were

William Brown is the first candidate to file his nomination papers for councilor at Russell Township. higher. I would look into getting a lower rate.” He would also like a study on if doubling Boundary Road, or adding a bi-directional centre, would be feasible. “I go into the city every morning and there is almost an acci- dent every day.” Regarding the proposed private commer- cial landfill issue he says he would study every aspect of it. “I’ve been to a shanty- town around a dump near Capetown and I’ve seen the Cape Breton tar ponds before and after. Things you do on a small scale can have an impact.” Regarding citizens on patrol he promises that, if elected, he will donate a month’s worth of his councilor stipend annually to Russell Watch. “Money helps, even if it’s just buying gas cards for volunteers.” He is also interested in the off-leash dog park concept and in encouraging a dis- count grocer to enter the township. “
