SWING SMART GOLF SCREENING FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE

If you’re a golf enthusiast searching for a way to play a round without experiencing physical pain, I’m here with some great news. I’m Joe McIntire, a team member at Campus Commons Physical Therapy. For more than three years, I’ve helped our patients address

16 standardized tests and compare the golfer’s measurements to normative data based on PGA Tour players. Following the movement screen, we will then analyze and assess the golfer’s swing and motion to identify characteristics that may indicate inefficiencies in their swing or why they’re experiencing pain. From there, we work to reset the body

our screening program has already been an overwhelming success! One patient noted a complete reduction in his swing-related back pain within the first two weeks of implementing our recommendations based on our analysis, while others have told us how happy they are to use something they love as a path toward increased physical activity and greater mobility. Utilizing golf in physical therapy isn’t just one of my areas of professional interest; it’s also the latest chapter in my lifelong passion for the game. My dad introduced me to it when I was young, and the thrill of being on the green has never left me. I especially love that it’s a sport that anyone can do independently, without a team, and really focus on their individual skills and goals. It’s a pleasure to connect with other golf enthusiasts and combine my experience with the sport and my expertise in physical therapy to help my fellow players feel better while improving their game. I can’t wait to help you use golf to better your well-being. Please contact us at (916) 927-1333 to learn more about the screening process and how we can help you swing like never before.

and overcome various physical obstacles, including pain that had hindered their enjoyment of life. Now, I’m excited to share that we can provide a new level of specialized services directly to golfers at all levels so that they can optimize their swing and play pain free! Last summer, I earned Level 1certification from the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), the world’s leading organization dedicated to studying human body functions through golf.

through a tailored program of recommended mobility and strengthening exercises as well as golfing drills. After working through the program, the screen is performed again to track progress and continue to develop swing efficiency. The spirit behind Campus Commons’ investment in our new program speaks to TPI’s philosophy of providing each golfer a unique roadmap to success: “TPI does not

I am now providing a specialized screen and swing analysis for golfers to assess mobility, strength, and bodily control to optimize what TPI calls “the Body- Swing Connection.” The screening process, which typically takes approximately 30 minutes, is simple: We perform a movement assessment involving

believe in one way to swing a club, [but] rather in an infinite number of swing styles. But we do believe there is one efficient way for every player to swing, and it is based on what the player can physically do.”

As someone who loves helping golfers achieve their full potential, I’m thrilled to share that

DREAMS TO DESTINY

Celebrities Who Conquered Their Goals

SABRINA TEAMS WITH TAY-TAY Sabrina Carpenter is a pop star in her own right, but few achievements have meant more to her than sharing the stage with the queen herself, Taylor Swift. While touring with Swift as her opening act in 2024, Carpenter joined her idol for a duet on the song “White Horse.” Shortly after the performance, she shared a tweet she had posted as a 10-year-old in 2009, lamenting that she had been turned down for a karaoke contest that offered a chance to meet Swift because she had to be at least 13 to participate. She was clearly pleased with her eventual consolation prize. BILLIE GOES FOR BOND Long before “James Bond” film fan Billie Eilish became one of the biggest music acts of her generation, she wrote imaginary theme songs for the legendary franchise with her brother, Finneas. “We would — kind of as not even a joke, like a fantasy — sit down and write ‘Bond’ songs, thinking it was the coolest thing,” she told E! News. Fast-forward to 2021, and her theme for “No Time to Die” charmed moviegoers worldwide.

What do most celebrities want when they already seemingly have it all? More!

Whether they’re famed actors on the big screen or legends of the arena stage, the world’s most celebrated performers rarely stop reaching for new heights. Here’s how talent and determination helped three celebs achieve their wildest dreams. GRANDE GETS GLINDA At 31, Ariana Grande has already reached heights that few celebrities experience. At 8 years old, the Florida native performed the national anthem at a Florida Panthers game, immediately earning accolades beyond her home state for her powerful voice and unforgettable stage presence. These days, Grande is best known for her superstar-making turn as Glinda in the hit film “Wicked” — an accomplishment on her career bucket list since she was a teenager. In a 2011 tweet, Grande praised “Wicked” on Broadway as an “amazing production” before adding “how badly” she “wanted to play Glinda at some point in [her] life.” Her wish finally came true in 2024, when her portrayal of Glinda helped the film adaptation earn nearly $750 million worldwide.

The takeaway? Even stars have big dreams — and there’s no reason not to pursue yours.

Get Your Back on Track A GOLFER’S GUIDE TO LOW-BACK PAIN

Are you experiencing lower back pain with your golf swing? If so, you’re not alone.

stress to the lower back. Common back injuries include muscle strains, ligamentous sprains, disc injuries, altered joint mechanics or motor control, degenerative arthritis, or bone fractures. To prevent and treat back pain experienced during golf, we must normalize movement patterns and optimize swing mechanics. Our TPI-certified physical therapist, Joe McIntire, PT, DPT , can conduct a movement screen and swing analysis to help identify movement deficits and altered movement patterns, optimize your swing, and get you back to playing golf pain-free. Please contact us today for more information.

In a study of 31,000 golfers, 28.1% experienced lower back pain every round of golf. Although the lower back is the typical source of pain, the lower back is rarely the cause of the symptoms. Oftentimes, abnormal motion and forces from neighboring and/or distant areas of the body result in excessive work and force on the lower back, ultimately leading to a painful condition. Issues could include mobility deficits in the ankles, hips, thoracic spine, and shoulders. Occasionally, weakness and/or lack of coordination in certain areas can also lead to overuse and

THE BENEFITS OF WATER WORKOUTS

Water is one of a physical therapy patient’s best friends.

minutes will benefit your body in ways that meet or exceed the effects of walking on land.

With sunny days prompting many of us to take a refreshing dip in our pools, now is the perfect time to use them as the best source of exercise you’ll likely find this season. According to Harvard Medical School, swimming and other water-based workouts can strengthen muscles, improve sleep, elevate your outlook, and even reduce the risk of diabetes, heart ailments, and cancer. Here are a few interesting facts and tips to help you build a more vigorous aquatic exercise routine. THE REWARDS OF RESISTANCE Because water is denser than air, it offers up to 14% more natural resistance than working out on dry land. Water also provides more support to muscles and joints while serving as an excellent means of cardio and strength training. Perhaps most significantly, research shows that water exercise improves mobility in people with knee osteoarthritis and other joint diseases. AQUA EXERCISE ESSENTIALS Whether in your home pool or at the beach, water can be used to your advantage in several ways. If you enjoy walking around the neighborhood, try strolling in water instead. Starting in waist-deep water, stand tall and walk heel-first with your arms at your side. Moving in this position for 5–10

If you’re looking for a wet way to work your arms, stand in shoulder-high water with foam dumbbells at your side. With your palms facing upward, move your elbows toward your torso to reach the water’s height. From there, turn your wrists and return to your starting position. Based on your comfort level, gradually work up to three sets of up to 15 reps each.

As with any new exercise routine, it is recommended that you consult with

your physician and physical therapist before undertaking aquatic aerobics to help prevent injuries and other unintended issues. Please contact us for resources and suggestions on making water work for you.
