Who are Red Welcome to the world of Red. In 2008 when we first started pioneering inflatable paddle board technology, we believed in challenging the status quo. We made a commitment to never compromise on performance, looks or quality. We believed in designing products that delivered an authentic experience. 16 years on and our driving force remains exactly the same - creating high quality products to inspire adventures that enable people to enjoy the water and all the benefits that come with getting in, under or on it. At Red we believe in the universal truth that people’s need for the thrill of adventure will never fade, and the intrinsic desire to connect with the water and world will never change. As a certified B Corporation, Red is dedicated to taking steps to be more responsible through everything we do. So much so, every product with a Red logo has been designed and tested by our team in the UK to ensure it meets the demands of adventure and never compromises on performance, looks or quality.

This January, we joined over 800 paddlers from 25 different nationalities to assemble on the breath-taking shores of Lake Annecy to take part in the 9th edition of the iconic GlaGla race. Part of the Alpine Lakes Tour, this unique SUP race has been challenging paddlers to brave the freezing conditions (a staggering -3°C) for almost 10 years. A series of both long and short distance races, The Apline Lakes Tour is held on lakes around the Alps and is kicked off with the GlaGla. Our team went out to capture the action and find out why hundreds of paddlers have been returning to race on the frosty waters in France, time and again. The term ‘GlaGla’ means ‘teeth chattering cold’ and it is safe to say we swiftly understood the meaning of this phrase as soon as we arrived in the small town of Talloires. The normally quiet and sleepy village had been flooded with paddleboarders from across the globe, excited for an action-packed weekend of SUP racing. Lake Annecy is overlooked by the dramatic snow-capped mountains of the northern French Alps. Whilst this makes a stunning backdrop for a SUP race, it also brings with it some seriously unpredictable weather conditions. The morning of race day we awoke to cold and crisp conditions as we watched paddlers hastily scraping ice off their boards before warming up with hot coffee and donning their dry suits. However, sudden offshore winds left both race organisers and competitors feeling a little on edge as to whether the event could even go ahead. Thankfully, the ever-changing mountain weather worked in their favour and the winds dropped, bringing clear skies and near perfect paddling conditions. A few last-minute adjustments to the course also meant that this SUP race could handle another shift if the wind chose to come back... Welcome to the mountains! There are two main categories for paddle board racing at the GlaGla - a 6km short course or a long-distance 15km that takes competitors around the lake. We spotted plenty of Red racing paddle boards out on the lake, one being that of ‘SUP the world’ legend, John Mcfadzean, paddling the 6km route.

“
For me, it’s the opportunity to paddle board in epic locations and hang out with like- minded people” John Mcfadzean
There were some strong competitors in this SUP race, a lot of them fighting the freezing conditions to the end. Many had returned from previous years to beat their earlier times, while others took a more light-hearted approach wearing fancy dress. The distance races were followed by a multi-person Dragon board race and a technical race. Frenchman Ludovic Teulade (listed as one of the top ten SUP racers in the world) took the top spot for the men’s category, completing the 15km SUP race in under 1 hour 30 minutes, while Switzerland’s Anna Tschirky took first place for the ladies in the competition, finishing in 1 hour 36 minutes.
If you put the paddle board racing aside, the true magic of the GlaGla has to be its community - from the dedicated volunteers helping participants prepare for their races through to the enthusiastic spectators cheering from the side. It’s the community atmosphere that keeps paddlers coming back each year to challenge themselves and their peers on the water, all while reconnecting with like-minded people. It also offers an opportunity to mix and paddle alongside some of the world’s best SUP racers and, although the conditions can be challenging, anybody from anywhere can sign-up. The community also offers great support to new paddlers looking to challenge themselves for the first time.

Hold your breath
WORDS Luca Sommaruga Malaguti
Red Ambassador Luca Malaguti is a professional freediver and adventurer who has made it his mission to complete a range of extreme challenges around the globe, all in aid of mental health awareness. In his own words, he talks about his adventures to Iceland and Greenland, where his love for the extreme cold began, and what he has learnt about overcoming mental challenges. Why Iceland? Why Greenland? What draws us to explore these mysterious lands? The answer is simple – the icebergs. Whether its paddleboarding around them, freediving under them or ice climbing over them, all of these activities are extremely dangerous. They are constantly moving, unpredictable and dynamic. So why did we embark on something that is considered one of the most dangerous challenges in the world? The fact that 90% of the iceberg’s mass is hidden beneath the water is symbolic of how we often hide our own emo- tions and mental difficulties. In today’s society, we often suppress our problems, depressions and traumas – hiding them just like an iceberg’s mass. Freediving under an iceberg takes a lot of courage, patience and resistance – the same traits needed to face up to our own emotions, traumas and anxieties. We too need to dive into ourselves and confront our issues in order to improve our mental health and well-being.

Our iceberg challenge started back in 2021 when Tim Emmett, a world-renowned ice and rock climber, and myself started to talk about the idea of combining elements of climbing and freediving in Iceland. These two different sports have a lot in common, demanding the same mental resolution of remaining calm and being able to find peace within the present moment by relaxing the mind and body. It’s all about keeping the mind at ease and controlling your breath. So, Tim and I put a plan together to ice climb and free dive amongst the icebergs in Iceland and Greenland. We quickly realised the best way to get around would be to self propel ourselves using paddle boards. The opportunity to work with Red Paddle Co, the makers of the best inflatable paddleboards in the world, was immediately clear, which then escalated into 2 sports becoming 4 by also incorporating paddleboarding and SUP surfing. Ice Breaker
WORDS Robyn Dawson + Kate Steels
PHOTOS Stu Walker
While the ice bath trend may be introducing more newbies to the health benefits of cold water, for over ten years there has been a global community of people taking to the ice every winter to prove their worth in chilly waters. Formed in 2009 with a vision to share the benefits of ice swimming and turn it into a new sport, the IISA (International Ice Swimming Association) was born. The IISA coined the term ‘Ice Swimming’ and categorised it as swimming in waters of 5 degrees or lower, wearing only “skins”. Not a wetsuit in sight - just swimwear, a hat and goggles! Since then, more people around the globe have been competing in IISA events, testing their stamina and competing in distances from 50m to 1000m and the ultimate icy challenge to become the fastest person in the world to complete an Ice Mile. One of those early adopters of the sport was our newest Red Ambassador, Kate Steels. Now a global ice swimming champion, Kate, 54, is the third person in the world (and first in the UK) to achieve the ICE SEVENS. This comprises swimming an ice mile in each continent of the world including one at zero degrees C! Kate competed in the 5th World Championships in Somoens, France, in January 2023 joining fellow Red Ambassador, Fenwick Ridley, as they made up two expert members of Team GB.
Hi Kate! Welcome to the Red Ambassador team. Can you tell us a bit more about why you love ice swimming? “Ice Swimming has taken me to some of the most amazing places in the world and I have been fortunate to compete at several world championships, even gaining podium positions. I have also made so many good friends around the globe and met my partner through swimming. Not everything has been easy for me. Far from it. I have experienced some horrendous challenges in my life. I tragically lost my only son, Daniel, aged just 19, in 2018. The pain, heartache, loss and complete devastation this has caused is indescribable and every single day is hard. Swimming, especially in cold water helps me cope. Getting out into open water is “my space” where I can feel more at ease, and I try and find my reset button.”
Why do you think people go ice swimming and compete, what drives them? “Ice swimming is becoming increasingly competitive and attracting more swimmers with a history of competitive pool swimming. This is exciting and leads to more records being broken and new ones set - as happens with any new sport. I don’t have a competitive pool background. What attracts me to Ice Swimming is the challenge, the feeling of being with at one with nature even in the depths of winter, feeling the icy water on your skin, making new friends and having unique opportunities to swim in amazing places all around the world. Ice Swimming is not just about competition – it has an adventurous side too – which is where the Ice Miles come in. Ice Swimming can also be social. It appeals to many people of all shapes, sizes, disabilities and ethnicity. I often hear swimmers tell me that they love getting in the local lake or the sea but wouldn’t dare go to a swimming pool. There is certainly something special about outdoor swimming.” Has this rise in interest affected your own experience of Ice Swimming. Considering it is still a relatively small community, have you seen an increase in participants in the IISA events? “In 2016 there were 40 competitors for IISA GB Championships. This year we have over 100 entries. At the inaugural IISA World Championships in Murmansk, I was one of just two GB swimmers to compete (the other being Rory Fitzgerald). We have just held our 5th World Championships. There were almost 500 competitors in total and Team GB had 44 swimmers.”

always be mindful of nature and take care to avoid erosion on riverbanks etc. • I recommend always using a tow float in open water so you can be seen by other water users. Write your name on the tow float (in case of emergency). • Finally – always, always respect the water. The main benefits of swimming are for well-being and mental health as well as being a wonderful way to meet people and make new friends. Swimming is a non-weight-bearing activity – which enables those with joint and mobility difficulties to take part. I also believe that swimming throughout the year builds your immune system. I very rarely get colds, flu or stomach bugs. Having said that I never swim after heavy rain and always monitor water quality. There is a range of informal swimming groups in most corners of the UK so it’s easy to make friends with like-minded people and avoid the dangers and risks of swimming alone. Some groups are aimed more at social “dipping” whilst others are more focused on swimming and fitness or events – plus everything in between! Safety is critical and I would recommend finding a good coach initially before plunging into open water for the first time. This is a must if you are looking to take on Ice Swimming.”
Cold-water swimming, wild swimming and ice bathing have all become ‘buzz words’ over the past couple of years. Do you have any advice for people looking to try it out for the first time? “I always recommend that someone finds a coach to try cold water or ice swimming the for first time. In addition, my key tips are: • Never swim alone. • Always know your entry and exit points for wild swimming (this can look hugely different in the water compared to on land. • Listen to your body and do not stay in too long. • Have lots of loose warm layers, a woolly hat and windproof jacket to put on. • The Pro Change Robes are perfect for this, and I also have a Red Revolution 3-in-1 change parka which is brilliant for those more extreme cold temperatures. • Have your kit ready, the right way around in the order you will put them on. • Get dressed quickly before the “after drop” sets in. • Bring a hot drink and something to snack on after your swim • I would recommend starting outdoor swimming in the summer and then keep swimming regularly into the winter. • Do not swim in flooded, polluted water or after periods of heavy rain. • Make sure you are legally allowed to swim at your chosen location,

Winter waves

For many, the changing of the clocks marks the time for hibernation. Paddlers pack away their gear awaiting the return of warmer conditions or occasional weather windows. The nights draw in and we judge how good the weather has been based on the name of the storm. Storms that whip up swells and carry them across oceans to crash on our shores. Sure, it’s a change of the clocks but more importantly it’s a change of the guard. It’s a time when surfers reclaim beaches, line-ups fill with familiar faces and long periods offer broken conversations with old friends. Dark dawn sessions burst to life with golden sunrises and nature stirs all around us. The cold heightens our senses making everything seem that much sharper, that much more intense. Lines form on the horizon. Frozen breath lingers as we cradle cold fingers waiting for that next wave. This is not the time for hibernation, but the time to feel alive – a chance to experience the elements and the full force of Mother Nature. Those hazy summer days might be far behind us but ahead are the winter waves. When every session is hard earned, but the rewards are that much more special.

When we were looking for true adventurers put our products through their paces in a harsh winter environment, Sweden was the clear choice. We tend to avoid using models on Red shoots and instead track down real adventurers, people that actually live and breath what we want to capture. Then we just go along for the journey. So, the Red team set off on a week-long adventure to the Nordics with our photography and film crew in tow to capture all of the action. Call time on day one was pre-sunrise, with frost on the ground and the cold air biting our finger tips we met Jessica and Ellias for the first time. We had spoken to them several times via email so it was great to put faces to their names. They were to be our urban explorers and their stomping grounds were the streets and waters of Stockholm. It was a stunningly crisp morning and exactly what we had hoped for. Drysuits at the ready our two city explorers were testing out our Compact boards. The Compact is in its element in the city and Stockholm being surrounded by water was the perfect match for this epic board. Unrolling the boards and getting them pumped up was a great way to get warmed up before hitting the water. The fog of breath from Jessica and Ellias’ mouths indicated they were warm and ready to go. Launching from Skeppsholmen island meant we had the beautiful backdrop of Gamla Stan for this paddling trip and what a stunning combination it was, the boards, the paddlers, the location and of course the weather. We could not have asked for a better start to this intensive shoot, but that was not the end of day one.
25
Having never been to Sweden before I couldn’t believe the variety of different landscapes. The second location for day one was a complete contrast to the look and feel of the city. Bjorkviksvägen is nestled on the east coast of Stockholm and made the perfect setting for our Voyager camp out scene. This stunning beach faced just a couple of the 267,570 (not a typo!) little islands that make up Sweden. The tree lined banks and rocky out crops reaching out into the ocean resulted in some spectacular shots. The sunlight pierced through the treeline creating a magical dappled light, the perfect setting for our explorers to hike with their boards on their backs to the camping and launch spot. Our paddlers for this leg of the shoot were James, our Swedish distributor, Goran, a long distance race specialist and Neith, an epic adventurer who has been part of around the world sailing teams. All local to Sweden, they had all the kit to keep them warm on the water and we provided the warmth off the water in the form of the new Pro Change Evo robes. The new colours; Stealth Black, Mulberry Wine and Sea Mist Blue matched the tone of the light perfectly. Thats one of my main take aways from Sweden, just epic light, warm yet cold, vibrant yet pastel. It was an amazing place to light a camp fire, gather around for warmth and sip on a hot chocolate that had been kept toasty by our Red thermal cups. mmmmm It is crazy to think all of this was packed into day one. Day two saw us back in the heart of Stockholm. This time the star of the show was the brand new Revolution 3 in 1 Parka. The cooler climate of Stockholm was just the best place to show off the layering system. For this part of the shoot we highlighted the urban street style of the product. We had Emma from the UK join us along with Kim from Sweden. They were a great paring and gave the images the edge we were hoping for. But the best was yet to come.
The sunlight pierced through the treeline creating a magical dappled light” “
27
Following our morning in the city we drove 6 hours into the night. With James collecting Frida Benedikt on the way, Salen on in the north west of Sweden was the destination. We had set up the ultimate test for the robe line up and we were very excited to get going. The Salen Tourism board had kindly arranged the accommodation for our team during our stay in the country. The traditional cabin, Gammelgården, is famous for its lengthy history. Being originally built in 1649, it is a place of fireside tranquillity in a remote scenic setting. The cabin made the perfect shoot location for the Revolution and the ideal base for the incredible snowy adventures that followed.
29
Having arrived after dark we were still yet to take in our surroundings, and come morning they did not disappoint. Snow as far as the eye could see only broken up by a scattering of pine trees, we had found our wilderness, we had found our adventure. As we sat down to breakfast we were faced with options like reindeer or bear sausages - we were not in a Travelodge any more. The excitment in the air for the day ahead was almost tangible and only increased with the arrival of our transportation team. Who, as it turned out, were more excited to get going than we were.
The sound of 91 huskies desperately wanting to start a day of running through the snow is not a noise I will forget any time soon.” “
31
The sound of 91 huskies desperately wanting to start a day of running through the snow is not a noise I will forget any time soon. Our guides for the next few days were Ida and Bjorn. As I mentioned before, when arranging a photoshoot, we always try to use ‘models’ that actually live the life that we are portraying. Ida and Bjorn are the perfect example of this. Both are professional mushers who each live with their lead pack dog to help forge a closer connection - this seems key to the system; the dogs know their leader and the leaders know their master. I could sense the trust that they had with their animals and it was amazing to observe the fundamentals of nature and see the natural pecking order and discipline in action.
If anyone had any doubt at this point of just how bad ass these guys are, Ida joined us the following day for some ice plunge dipping. I had spoken to Ida when planning the shoot and she said she knew of a frozen lake not too far from where we were staying. The lake had a hole cut into the ice for dipping. The problem was, it hadn’t been used for just over a week so it “maybe” frozen over. I was presented with 2 options, would I like to pay 100€ to have the hole recut or shall we borrow the tools to do it ourselves? The creative director in me could visualise how epic using the tools would look on camera. For perspective, my reference of ice on a lake is a maximum of a few inches thick... Swedish ice on a lake is a few feet thick, and we were presented with a 4 foot drill bit, an axe and a 5 foot saw. An hour and a bit later we could finally get the shots we had been dreaming of. This was the ultimate example of how to use one of our change robes. Warming up and drying off after a dip in sub zero water. The robes were so impressive, they really did what they are designed to do in the harshest of conditions.

A recipe for adventure Shakshouka (v) Now I could have placed this dish in the breakfast category but as far as I’m concerned it works anytime of day. This is a dish that would wow house guests the minute you placed it in the centre of the dinner table, so imagine the reaction from your hiking or camping buddies! Serve straight from the pan for the best visual effect (saves on washing up), then it’s everyone (with a fork) for themselves for who gets the best cooked eggs. Sharing is caring after all. Equipment Stove, fuel, knife, chopping board, frying pan, spoon Ingredients 3-5 eggs, ½ white onion, 2 garlic cloves, 200g passata, 175g roasted peppers, 1 tsp smoked paprika, ½ tsp ground cumin, 20g fresh coriander, splash white wine vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, crusty bread* (optional) Method Finely dice your white onion and soften in good quality olive oil and a low heat. Once softened and translucent, chop your garlic as finely as you can and add to the onions along with your paprika, cumin and seasoning. Cook through until aromatic and then add your passata and roasted peppers, chopped into chunks. Stir through with a splash of white wine vinegar and bring to a simmer for 2-3 minutes. Knock your heat down to its lowest setting and create some small divots in the sauce to cradle your cracked eggs in. Dependant on the size of your pan you may get 3-5 eggs into the sauce, make sure to leave a bit of room in between. Once you’ve cracked the eggs into the sauce, place a lid on the pan and leave to simmer and cook through in the pan for at least 5 minutes. Finely chop some coriander and garnish over the top and serve in the pan with an extra drizzle of olive oil and enjoy by itself or on top of some crusty bread (optional). Allergens: contains eggs, gluten* Serves 2-3
Tip – if you and your friends don’t mind a bit of spice, stir through some harissa paste before you add the eggs.

Performance under pressure Developed by lifeguards, Red Rescue is our dedicated lifesaving division, focussed on reducing drowning rates globally.
WORDS James Kelsall
Born from a collaborative design project with the RNLI International Team in 2018, Red Rescue was developed to deliver all the benefits of inflatable board design without compromising on performance. The aim was to enable the delivery of critical lifeguard training and water safety initiatives just about anywhere in the world. Designed and built to withstand some of the harshest conditions on the planet, the boards have since been deployed throughout the RNLI’s global outreach programmes and further developed by the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS), Surf Life Saving (SLS) New South Wales and SLS New Zealand.
Utilising our TEC-AIR production process, reinforced material (MSL Tough) and patented stiffening system, the boards offer unparalleled performance whilst being more durable and transportable than their hard board cousins. Tested by lifeguards in a range of conditions and countries, the boards also feature a number of innovative details to improve control and comfort when on long patrols. The inflatable construction makes them safer for lifeguards and water users alike in large surf or crowded swim zones.
Operational in 22 countries worldwide, the boards are used by surf lifesaving clubs, lifeguard trainers, open-water swim coaches, watersports centres, event water safety teams, aqua-parks, search and rescue teams, fire departments and many more. Their bright yellow colour, small pack size and rapid acceleration also make them the perfect choice for swimmers and triathletes training for longer distances. Whilst they are designed for professional use, the prone boards also allow swimmers to be easily supported afloat and act as a great form of cross- training to focus on technique and fitness.

Foundations for the future
WORDS Robyn Dawson
This autumn we announced our new charitable program, the Red Foundation. Recently certified as a B Corp, the move allows for a more targeted approach to our extensive social community work and closely aligns with our unwavering goal to make paddle boarding and the outdoors more accessible. Communication Manager, Robyn Dawson oversees the program and tells us more... “For several years we have been working towards the idea of a Red Foundation as a way of encompassing all our existing civic engagement and community support work. We have always been passionate about supporting and enabling more people to get outside and onto the water and over the years we’ve supported individuals and organisations that span a variety of socially responsible areas. We now hope to reach even more passionate people and support them in their goal to make the outdoors a more inclusive and welcoming space. The Red Foundation will offer grants to small groups and individuals that align with its two core areas, Blue Health, and Access to All. The presiding themes are helping address inclusivity and diversity in the outdoors, mental health, and conservation/
education around the water. The projects we’ve previously supported have been driven by a deep-seated passion within our team to address inclusivity and diversity issues within our industry. This has grown organically through conversations with individuals or groups sharing how they are actively working to address this issue. We are hearing first-hand that so many people across society do not see a place for them on the water or in the outdoors and the Red Foundation strives to change that. We strongly believe everyone deserves to have access to adventure and to inspire others through their own experiences. The foundation will help to champion those people, many who are volunteers who are out there driving change in their own communities. Hopefully through backing from the Red Foundation and Red’s global platform, we can connect even more people with these groups and continue to make a positive change together Groups and individuals may be offered support in the form of equipment and/or funding, depending on the necessities of the project. The intake for applications for 2023/24 is now closed. We are now reviewing all submissions and we will be in touch with all applicants throughout December.

Made from our robust MSL ® material and equipped with virtually indestructible fins, this board is designed for stability, plus a silky smooth ride thanks to its 32” width and round-nose profile.
10% of profits from our limited-edition board go to Love The Oceans
