covered and heaven is reached in safety and in peace. II. P roclaiming L iberty (25-36) Christians often are slow to under stand and acknowledge who our Lord really is. Since this is true, they should be sympathetic toward the people of this lesson who, after all the signs that had been given» still could ask of Christ, “Who art thou?” His reply referred them to the Father, but they did not understand. At last He plain ly declared that When He should be lifted up they would know who He was. He further told them that the Father was w i t h Him because He could say, “I do always those things that please him” (v. 29). The words indicated also that all who please'd the Father might be assured of the Father’s presence. As the Lord Jesus spoke these words, “many believed on him” (v. 30)'. Those who “ believed” were told they needed to continue, or abide, in His word, if they would experience true liberty (vs. 31, 32). They would be disciples, or learners, coming to the knowledge of the truth, and the truth would make them free (v.'32). This word Evidently caused them to be offended, for they asserted they were never in bondage to any one (v. 33). This statement was false, be cause even at that moment the Ro mans were their masters. But Jesus reminded them of a deeper and more hateful bondage in which those who commit sin are ever found (v. 34). He followed t h i s explanation with the glorious promige to His hearers that if they would come to Him and would allow Him to have His way with them, their shackles would be broken, and thqy would experience real' freedom. The truth makes free (v. 32), and the Son makes free (vs. 35, 36); they are one and the same (cf. John 14:6)'. . Christ was speaking in - a spiritual sense, as the next verses make clear. This passage should not be left with out a reference to the distinction be tween “Abraham’s seed" (v. 37) and “Abraham’s children" (v. 39), between the natural and spiritual aspects of the truth. HI. A ffirming D ei ^ y (56-59) The Lord Jesus C h r i s t declared, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day” (v. 56). This reference to Abraham called forth objection from

But the Lord Jesus Christ promises that those who follow Him shall have the darkness dispelled and shall have the light of life upon their path. The fact that the whole journey is not illumined in its entirety is no reason that His light should not be followed as far as it leads. There always will be more light as it is needed. Christians sometimes are like the boy who Was going through the dark and who said to his father, “I’m afraid because I cannot see.” The father replied, “Walk to the edge of the circle of light com in g from the lantern you carry.” The boy obeyed, and thus, step by step, the two reached home in safety. Just so those who follow the Lord Jesus may see but a step at a time, but walking in the light of Christ’s presence, they find that ultimately all the road is A NEW WHITER This month, Mrs. Neil Morten- sen joins the writers for THE KING'S BUSINESS, furnishing the material appearing in the Children's Division.
