swer suggested that she could not, but she could and did confess her be lief in Him as being ‘.‘the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.” Martha Was practical, but rigidly practical individuals some times find it hard to enjoy the quiet, restful satisfaction of heart that may be the portion of all believers. Because -of this characteristic of hers, Martha ■virtually limited the Lord’s power, even as her ancestors had done (cf. Psa, 78:41). She limited Him as to place (v, 21), as to time (v. 24), and as to extent of power (v. 39), But thete can be no actual limitations to “the Christ, the Son of God.” His won der-working power may be seen any where that He is allowed to work. Martha left Him to call her sister Mary, telling her: "The Master [the Teaches] is'com e, and calleth for thee” (vs. 28, 29). II. , M eeting M a r y (32-35, 38) Mary’s greeting was exactly like Martha’s (v. 32), but her whole atti tude was' different from her sister’s. Mary was at His feet when she uttered the same- words as did Martha, but there was no suggestion that even now Lazarus might be restored to life. She implied that if Jesus had not re sponded in time, He had a good . reason and she-would simply trust His ' wisdom and grace in whatever hap pened. Mary had sat at His feet in days of sunshine (cf. Lk. 10:39), and her/communion with Him at that time strengthened her for this day of dark ness, when she was again found “at his feet.” Later on she would be found again in that place of humility and submission, when she alone could enter With Him into the sorrow He faced, and with understanding heart anoint His feet for burial (cf. John 12:1-7). Such submissive humility and per fect trust deeply touched our Lord and, when He.saw the grief and heard the sobs, “Jesus wept” (vs. 33-35, 38). Human woe, as well as human igno rance and bondage and impenitence, always touches the heart of the Saviour. The Jews who were present imme diately brought an implied criticism! of Him (v. 37), as much as to say, “He could have prevented this and did BLACKBOARD LESSON

There was an implied re buke in Martha’s- greeting, while at the .same time there was an appeal for Christ to work a mirâcle (vs. 20 - 22 ). - Martha must be taught not only what Jesus could d.o, but ' also what He was (vs. ¿3-27). Jesus gave her assurance that' Lazarus would rise, and Martha took the word as referring to her knowledge concerning the resurrection at the last day. But there would be no "last day" unless Jesus Himself was thé resurrection and the life. In Him, resurrection and life were as truly present then as they ever could bcr because He was pres ent.
