A lmost any day in Los Angeles, if one walks down Broadway from Fifth to Seventh Streets, he can see a strange sight which may cause him to wonder if he has been transported to India. A group of hippie-type young Americans, barefoot, clad in saffron robes, adorned with beads and with red markings on their foreheads, line both sides of the street, ringing bells and banging cymbals, sway ing and chanting. The heads of the young men are shaven, save for a patch on the very top, and an occa sional long tress hanging down the back. Apparently “ they toil not nei ther do they spin” ; they do not hold jobs or attend school. They have dedicated their lives to chant ing pagan songs, begging, selling literature, beads and incense, at tending cult services and button holing any passers-by who will lis
ten to their propaganda. They rail against the killing of animals for food and clothing. The god they worship is Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, supreme god, creator and preserv er, who, with Brahma and Siva, comprise the Hindu triad (counter feit of the Christian Trinity). Hin duism includes thousands of cults and of course millions of gods. This particular cult, which has been op erating in the United States for several years, calls itself “ The In ternational Society for Krishna Con sciousness” and is headed by a certain “ Archarva” who bears the title of “ His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami." Reverenced highly by these devotees, appar ently he exercises absolute control over them.
